Description:

Manufactured by Remington Arms (RA) in 1943 and modified by Springfield Armory presumably to a 1903A3 National Match (NM) configuration (no documentation available). In an attempt to reestablish the NM rifle program, Springfield Armory selected a small number of Model 1903A3 Remington and Smith Corona (SC) rifles for modification into a National Match configuration to determine their suitability for competitive shooting prior to starting a large scale production program. After converting approximately 140 of the Model 1903A3 National Match rifles, Springfield abandoned the project completely as being unsuitable, with those few assembled examples being released by the DCM in a National Match configuration. This rifle has been assembled in that configuration and is currently fitted with the following modifications: replacement of the original wartime bolt with an early, milled and polished Remington M1903 bolt, replacement of the stamped front sight base with a pre-war milled 1903 front sight base and front sight assembly, removal of the Model 1903A3 rear sight, and the installation of a Redfield rear sight base on the left side of the receiver with staked screws and installation of a Redfield Olympic micrometer rear sight. This rifle, like most of the Model 1903A3 rifles converted to National Match configuration, was re-parkerized by Springfield Armory with a replacement "S" stock. The stock has a Springfield "SA/O" overhaul mark and circled "P" proof mark. This rifle still retains the original "RA/6-43" four groove barrel, stamped RA barrel bands, trigger guard, trigger, follower, sear, safety and cocking piece. These unique rifles are described on pages 204-206 of "The Springfield 1903 Rifles" by Col. William Brophy. Model 1903A3 NM rifles are extremely rare. The consignor indicated this rifle belonged to former United States Border Patrol commander, Immigration and Naturalization Service regional director, and National Rifle Association board member, Institute for Legislative Action head, executive vice president, and 39th president: Harlon Carter. He is credited with redirecting the NRA from focusing on marksmanship to the country's leading organization in the defense of the 2nd Amendment. There are some splashed of tar on the gun that reportedly came from when his roof was being redone. This gun was given to Harlan Carter by Col. Brophy. Mr. Cors obtained the gun from Carter.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 98% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall. The stock and handguard are both in near mint condition with crisp cartouches and proofs. The tar mentioned above is primarily on the top of the handguard. Mechanically excellent. A unique representative example of a very scarce M1903A3 NM rifle.
