Description:

Reportedly 255,040 Model 1863 Type II, also known as Model 1864, rifle-muskets were manufactured in 1864-1865. These Type IIs are nearly identical to the Model 1863 Type I before it, but now with spring retained barrel bands and typically with a simplified single leaf rear sight. This example, dated "1863" on the lock and barrel, falls in the transitional period and still has a Type I two leaf sight. These rifles are significant in the history of U.S. martial arms, as they armed Union troops and saw widespread use in the latter years of the Civil War. They are the last U.S. regulation muzzle loading arm. The left stock flat is marked with circled script cartouches "HSH" and "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin). Includes a U.S. socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle-musket is mostly bright finish. The barrel, barrel bands, buttplate and trigger guard have a smooth finish and do not appear to have been repolished. The nipple, bolster and adjacent portions of the barrel are free from flash pitting. The barrel markings are very crisp and the edges of the flats are sharp and distinct. The rear sight retains 99% original blue finish. The casehardened lock displaying a smooth gray surface with the hammer displaying 60% vivid original case colors. The lock and bolster markings are crisp. The re-oiled stock is also very fine with distinct edges, a small chip and 3/4 inch crack ahead of the lock, a small chip to the right of the trigger, some very light storage marks and scratches, and crisp cartouches. Included bayonet is very fine with some scattered light pitting, and sharp edges.
