Manufactured in 1893. The receiver is factory engraved with attractive light floral scrollwork, scroll and line border and game scene panels depicting running stags with minimal background work. The engraved motif is very similar to Marlin's No. 1 pattern as illustrated in Brophy's "Marlin Firearms" on page 531. Additional scrollwork decorates the breech end of the special order extra length 28 inch octagonal barrel. The rifle is equipped with a German silver blade front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight and tang peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line legend and "38-W." "MARLIN SAFETY" is marked on top of the receiver. The nicely figured deluxe walnut forearm and pistol grip stock features multi-point checkering. Sling eyelets are mounted to the underside of the forend cap and buttstock. Includes a leather sling.

Very good. The barrel retains 40% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The magazine tube retains original blue finish in the protected areas, otherwise a mottled brown-gray patina. Silvered out original case colors remain in the protected areas of the receiver. The engraving is crisp. The buttplate has a smooth dark patina with light spotting. The refinished wood is very good with a divot on the comb, number of minor dings and scratches and mostly smooth varnished over forearm checkering. Mechanically excellent.
