Johan Rieger was an active gun maker in Munich from 1843 to 1855. We previously sold another very similar double barrel sporting gun by Rieger that was made for Ludwig II of Bavaria. The rib has "RIEGER IN MUNCHEN" inlaid in silver and surrounded by silver inlaid scrollwork. The breech also has silver bands/key patterns. The locks, breech ends of the barrels, and much of the furniture have engraved scrolls. The locks also have rotating hammer stalls/safeties. The stock has checkering with scallop pattern borders as well as foliage carved around the upper tang, a wooden trigger guard with scroll tail, relief scroll carving behind the prominent cheek rest, and a plain bare butt with only a heel plate which is marked "3025."

Fine with light patina forming on the otherwise bright cleaned metal, attractive contrasting aged patina on the silver, and general minor wear. The stock is also fine and has distinct checkering, a few minor chips, and scattered scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent.
