Documented J.W. White Connecticut Militia Pattern Musket with Bayonet

This musket is featured and discussed on p. 211 and 212 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II: From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period" by George Moller. The majority of these New England militia pattern muskets were issued in the states in which they were manufactured. The furniture on this example is made up primarily of Model 1795 and Model 1816 pattern iron fittings, some of which may have been re-purposed. The barrel appears to have previously been from a Type III Model 1816, having "US/NWP/P" on the upper left, faint "J.W. WHITE/HEBRON CT" marking on top, partial "1836" date on the tang, and a bayonet stud on top of the at the muzzle. The lightly engraved commercial lock is marked "J. COOPER" at the center. "GDM" (George D. Moller) collection marking on the toe. Includes an unmarked socket bayonet with a visible splice/repair, Watervliet Arsenal leather sling, and wood tampion. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

ConditionVery good, showing mostly a bright grey patina, some vice marks on the left of the barrel at the breech, some light pitting mostly around the pan and on the buttplate, and some of the marking slightly softened. The re-oiled wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fair, sling is very good.
