Description:

Manufactured in 1905 by Springfield Armory, this rifle retains an original "SA/05" marked 30-03 chambered barrel. The intended successor to the 30-40 Krag/30 Army cartridge, the 30-03 was retired in favor of the 30-06, a round using a lower weight spitzer-pattern bullet to give a flatter overall trajectory. Many pre-1906 rifles in inventory were converted to use the new cartridge, leaving few in 30-03 caliber. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, the latter graduated to 2400 yards with a top volley notch, and a bolt with a polished body, blued handle, and casehardened bolt sleeve. Smooth straight wrist modern made stock, with a spurious "FC" cartouche on the left side, circled script "P" on the wrist, "GDM" collection mark ahead of the toe, a brown leather sling and a smooth steel buttplate. Included with the rifle is a 1906-dated Springfield bayonet with a leather sheath. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled from parts, showing brown patina overall and mild handling marks. The professionally made modern replacement stock is very fine, with some light chipping around the receiver and mild dings and dents overall. Mechanically needs work, as the firing pin and striker are broken. The bayonet is good, with patches of pitting on the blade and mild wear/staining overall.
