A total of around 16,500 Joslyn carbines were manufactured during the Civil War under contract with the U.S. government in two models. The U.S. Government purchased 2,200 of the Model 1862 carbines between 1862-1863. The Model 1862 is easily identified by its use of a friction catch for the breech rather than the pull out latch on the Model 1864. This example has the standard markings and features, including a pinched blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight, left mounted iron saddle bar and ring, brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate. Joslyn patent markings above the serial number "545" marked on top of the breech block, "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co/STONINGTON/CONN." marked on the lock, "E.F" inspection initials marked at the left of the breech and on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang, and two boxed script "EF" inspection cartouches stamped on the left stock flat. Fine, retains 50% original blue finish on the barrel mixed with mottled brown patina and freckling. 30% original case colors remain, strongest on the breech block, upper tang and in protected areas with smooth brown patina on the balance and some scattered moderate freckling. Stock is also fine with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, scattered light scratches and dents, some moderate chips, defined edges and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
