Approximately 5,802 Model 1847 cavalry musketoons were manufactured c. 1848-1859. These musketoons were used by the army in conflicts with Native Americans in the 1850s and during the Civil War. This musketoon is of the standard cavalry configuration with the ramrod retention swivels and a saddle bar and ring on the left side. "1848" dated lock and "1851" dated barrel tang. "31" carved in the right of the buttstock. Model 1847 cavalry musketoons are described on pages 223-232 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume III" by George D. Moller.

Rating Definition:

Good with scattered light pitting on the bright polished barrel, mottled gray and brown patina on the lock with some light pitting and some wear to the eagle marking with otherwise crisp markings in the metal. Replacement ramrod assembly with detached area underneath the barrel. Brass front barrel band displays mostly bright as lightly cleaned, brass rear barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate exhibit a dark golden aged patina with numerous dings. Stock is also good as sanded and re-oiled with numerous scattered dents, scratches, chips and cracks. Mechanically fine.
