Description:

Scarce most dramatic Mexican-American War Battle scene of Major Dix at the Battle of Buena Vista original oil painting by Edward Custer (Am 1837-1881). The most crucial battle of the Mexican-American War. On Feb 23, 1847 after refusing to surrender Major Zachery Taylor's army of 5,000 repelled the 20,000 forces of General Santa Anna. Major Roger Sherman Dix (1810-1849) is bearing the colors of the 2nd Indiana Volunteers and rallying his men to fight onward to a glorious victory. The oil painting shows the battle in progress with gun smoke emanating in the center of the battle, swords drawn, foes laying on the ground as American forces gain momentum to over run the Mexican army. Dramatic action on both sides of this battle. The painting is signed in verso "Edward L Custer". Americana at it's highest form with strong provenance of ownership. The painting was bought by the consignor in New Orleans, LA estate sale 9/30/06 after being held by original owner from inception of painting, sold to Senator Charles Ford, OK Senator 2007-2022, and repurchased from estate of Senator Ford 2022 by the consignor. Includes consignor research and sale invoice from 2006. Provenance: Senator Charles Reed Ford

Rating Definition:

Very fine with vibrant colors. The frame is silver painted with some fading and a few moderate crack at the bottom on the frame.
