Description:

Undoubtedly the most famous of the Savage arms, the Model 1899 was introduced during the heyday of the lever action in America and was a formidable competitor to Winchester and Marlin. The model's numerous variety of special order features and configurations has made the Model 1899 increasingly popular with today's collectors. In all, there are nearly 60 different models and special grade configuration of the Model 1899. Offered here is a carbine version from the early 1900s. The carbine is fitted with a correct Rocky Mountain blade front sight, a flip up 3-leaf platinum lines rear sight that is missing one blade, and a Lyman folding receiver tang peep sight. The 20 inch round barrel is without bands and is stamped with the two-line legend on top ahead of the rear sight and "SAVAGE SMOKELESS STEEL/HIGH PRESSURE POWDER" followed by "38-55" on the left side. Import marked on underside of barrel. The receiver has a cartridge counter and a saddle ring on the left side. Mounted on a straight grip stock and matching slight Schnabel tipped forend. Per the Cody Firearms Records Office serial number confirmation the factory record for this carbine confirms the round barrel in .38-55 caliber when it was accepted on September 4, 1903 and shipped on September 15 to V&B Sporting Goods Co. Savage offered .38-55 Winchester caliber to its line of Model 1899s from 1903 to 1917. Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel and receiver retain 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish with slight thinning to brown on the balance. The buttplate is a mix of blue and smooth brown patina. The lever retains 90% vivid original case colors. The wood is fine with a repair visible in the wrist and minimal handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
