Description:

Sheriff Warrell is recorded as a gunmaker in Portsmouth on the south coast of England from 1864 until circa 1886 when his son joined his business. The lack of “Not For Ball” proof marks indicates this gun pre-dates 1875. With browned Damascus barrels each engraved with scrollwork at the breech end and with concave rib between signed “S. WARRELL. PORTSMOUTH” towards the breech and engraved with further scrollwork and a duck in flight and fitted with a bead front sight. Birmingham black powder proof marks and 1991 reproof marks. Border and scroll engraved action with carved percussion fences and non-rebounding back action locks each signed “S. WARRELL”. Figured 15 inch straight hand stock including spacer and rubber heel plate, the grip and forearm checkered. The forearm with green horn tip, the butt with a blank silver shield shaped initial escutcheon on the underside. Weight 12 lbs. 3 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrels retain 98% rebrowned finish and have an attractive Damascus pattern, and some scattered storage and handling marks and blemishes. The engraving at the breech end and on the rib is clear. The rib has a small insert disc where it is engraved with the duck. Action and locks are bright with clear engraving and some minor age related wear and discoloration. Stock has been re-oiled and retains well-defined checkering, scattered minor storage and handling marks and bruises throughout. Mechanically very good.
