The accompanying factory letter confirms the octagon barrel in .40-70 caliber (a scarce chambering for this Winchester model), plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and takedown configuration. The letter also states the rifle was received in the warehouse on October 2, 1894 and shipped the same day. This fine deluxe Winchester Model 1886 in .40-70 caliber will make for a standout piece in any lever action collection. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight, a filler block in the rear sight dovetail, and Lyman receiver peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Winchester address ahead of the rear sight and "40-70 WCF" at the breech. The upper tang is stamped "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang has the patent dates and serial number. The deluxe "XX" walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature "H" style checkering. The pistol grip has an ebony insert, and the stock is fitted with a crescent buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "501 XX." The assembly number "501" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Fine. The barrel, magazine, forend cap, and takedown collar retain 60% original blue finish and the receiver retains 70% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. There is some pitting on the forend cap. 30% original case colors remain on the buttplate. The hammer and lever retain 90% original case colors. The wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches, filled sling swivel hole near the stock toe, and some wear in the checkering. Mechanically excellent. An attractive deluxe Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle in scarce .40-70 caliber that is a must have for the serious Winchester collector.
