This is a solid representative example of a Colt Model 1855 revolving carbine that was manufactured prior to the Civil War. According to the production figures on page 183 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson, approximately 2,300 Colt Model 1855 revolving carbines were produced in .56 caliber with a 21 inch barrel, and the book states "few only with saber bayonets", as seen on this example. This carbine has a five-shot cylinder, a Root-type side hammer, and a ratchet-type loading lever. Brass blade front sight and the folding three-leaf rear sight is graduated for 100, 300 and 600 yards. The rifle has an iron cleaning rod with knurled handle and threaded end fitted in the forearm. "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." marked on the top strap sight groove. Small "K" inspection stamp on the left of the trigger guard bow. Matching serial number "2510" marked on the barrel beneath the forearm, on the rear flat of the forearm, rear surface of the cylinder, cylinder retaining pin, bottom of the frame, trigger guard tang and buttplate, and handwritten in black ink inside the forearm channel and the lower tang mortise of the buttstock. Walnut stock and forearm. Factory sling swivels are located on the rear barrel band and trigger guard tang. A circular collection tag stamped "0183" is hanging from the trigger guard. Includes a brass handled saber bayonet with "1861" date marking at the base of the blade, leather scabbard with brass ends, and cleaning rod inside the butt compartment.
