Description:

An estimated 100,000 in total of these Colt special rifle-muskets were manufactured throughout the Civil War under contract with the Union and state governments. This model is based on the Enfield Pattern 1853 and has many features that were subsequently incorporated into the Springfield Model 1863 rifle-musket. This example has standard markings and features with an "1864" dated lock and barrel, "M.N.M" inspection initials on the left barrel flat at the breech, and two boxed script inspection cartouches including "AWM" and "JT" (John Taylor) stamped on the left stock flat. The barrel is fitted with a blued rear sight with two folding leaves graduated to 500 yards. Includes a "U.S." marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The musket retains its original "national armory bright" polished appearance with some scattered light freckling, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. The rear sight retains 99% original blue finish. The stock is also exceptionally fine with attractive original raised grain and absolutely distinct edges, a few scattered pressure dents on the left flat, moderate gouging on the right edge below the barrel, a few light handling marks, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine. This is an attractive original, exceptional example of an important Civil War rifle musket and a key Colt longarm!
