Description:

This classic Colt Model 1849 Pocket was manufactured in 1855 at Colt's London factory and has London proofs, the London barrel address, the distinctive round head English screws, and an iron grip frame. It features all matching serial numbers. It comes in an English case lined in navy blue. The case contains a cleaning rod, L-shaped combination tool, blued Colt mold, bag shaped James Dixon & Sons powder flask, W. & C. Eley cap tin, a key, spare nipples, and a spare mainspring. A russet brown leather flap holster is also included. The inside of the case lid has a Richard Burnand trade label inside the lid hand signed "J. Cookson Esqr." There were several related well-to-do J. Cooksons in England at the time, including Joseph Cookson Esqr. (d. 1865) of the Royal York Crescent, Clifton, his nephew John Cookson Esqr. of Meldon Park, Northumberland, and Joseph's grand-nephew, also Joseph Cookson, of Neachann. Provenance: The Norm Vegely Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the original vibrant case colors remaining, 80% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 40% original blue on the cylinder which has a crisp scene, 25% original silver on the grip frame, smooth gray and brown patina on the flaked areas, and generally minor overall wear from age and storage. The grip is also very fine and has nearly all of the glossy original varnish and minor handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is also very fine and has minor storage wear. The accessories are very fine with some mild wear mainly on the holster and cap tin. Overall, a very attractive cased set certainly fitting for an English gentleman in the mid-19th century.
