Presentation Cased, Inscribed, Factory Engraved Remington Over/Under Derringer Pistol with Pearl Grips and Documentation

Designed by William Elliot, the Remington Over/Under Derringer remained on the market for nearly 70 years and has become one of the best known of all the American type derringers. This example is a Type II or Model No. 3, and this variation began production in 1888 (with this example dated 1898, making it a desirable antique!). In all, collectors account for six separate variations associated with this model of derringer that was manufactured for several decades by Remington. The derringer offered here is beautifully decorated with period, likely factory, floral punch dot engraving. Along with the engraving, the back strap is presentation engraved "PRESENTED/BY/J.V.SCHMIDT/TO/REMINGTON/GUN/CLUB/SEPT 5/'98'". The top of the barrel rib is marked "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y." The matching number “451” is stamped on the left side of the frame under the grip and on the lower barrel. The derringer wears a set of attractive, smooth bird's head pearl grips. Includes a hardwood presentation case, key, cleaning rod, some .41 RF cartridges, and documentation pertaining to the Remington Gun Club including photographs and a booklet about the history of Ilion National Bank from 1867-1927. Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection

ConditionExceptionally fine, retains 95% plus of the original nickel finish and 60% of the original nitre blue on small parts, with a few of the small parts showing patches of light oxidation/pitting, and crisp engraving overall. The grips are very fine with a minor chip absent from the top of the left panel and otherwise minimal handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with a hairline crack, minor chipping, and some minor handling/storage marks.
