The Colt Single Action Army in .44-40 was named the "Frontier Six Shooter", after J.P. Moore's Sons ordered some in 1878. Single actions in .44-40 were particularly desirable in the West because they could use the same ammunition as the popular Winchester Model 1873 rifles and carbines. Since then the .44-40 WCF SAA has found a special place in the hearts of Peacemaker collectors. This magnificent example of the classic pre-war Colt "Frontier Six Shooter" SAA was manufactured in 1937. The barrel is stamped with the one-line Hartford address on top and "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER 44-40" on the left side. The left side of the frame has the two line, three patent dates marking followed by a Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and right side of both grip straps under the grip. The last two digits of the serial number ("31") are hand marked on the rear face of the cylinder. The right grip panel carries a fantastic, highly detail relief carving of a full length broadside portrait of a bison, the emblem of the western frontier. Excellent, retaining 98% plus original nickel finish with scattered light scratches, a cylinder drag line and slight flaking visible on the cylinder face. The grips are excellent, including the extraordinary raised relief carving. Mechanically excellent. A fabulous example of the iconic Colt Frontier Six Shooter SAA made more desirable with extraordinary relief carved bison grip.
