Description:

This rifle is an interesting example of the third type of Cochran turret rifles manufactured by Cyrus B. Allen in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the mid to late 1830s. Flayderman's Guide lists around 50 of these rifles in the approximately 155-200 range. These third types are most readily recognizable by the lack of a trigger guard and a hammer that engages the trigger at the front. This example has a different hammer design than the illustrated example and others we have seen. It has a loop on the bottom of the hammer. The rifled barrel has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and dovetailed sporting notch rear sight. The hinged top strap is marked "COCHRANS/MANY/CHAMBERED/PATENT/RIFLE" and "C.B. ALLEN/SPRINGFIELD/MASS." in two blocks. The turret, frame, top strap, and standing breech all have the matching serial number. The furniture is German silver.

Rating Definition:

Good with a dark brown patina on the iron overall, some mild pitting, and general mild overall wear. The German silver furniture has attractive aged patina. The stock is also good and has a dark finish, general scratches and dings, a thin crack at the top of the wrist, minor flakes at the toe, and minor overall wear. The turret stop isn't properly engaging. The trigger requires manual assistance when cocking, otherwise the hammer and trigger mechanism function mechanically fine.
