Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot 1

Winchester 1873 Rifle 32 WCF

The accompanying factory letter confirms the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger and plain pistol grip stock. The rifle was received in the warehouse on December 6, 1899. with a globe sight and shipped on December 7, 1899. Fitted with a blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight. The two-line address/King's Improvement patent dates are marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight with "32 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1873." The serial number is marked on the lower tang, and the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "32 CAL." It has the Third Model dust cover configuration. Mounted with a special order pistol grip stock featuring a hard rubber Winchester grip cap, sling eyelets and crescent buttplate.

The receiver is engraved with a South American dealer style (such as Belloto & Tognonato of Buenos Aires, Argentina) floral pattern with a rope and scallop border. The left side is engraved "MODEL, 1873". Blade front and folding ladder rear sights and buttstock compartment (cleaning rod not included). There is a brass collector's tag on the lever marked "31".

Manufactured in 1864. The barrel is fitted with a reproduction front blade sight and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1," "3" and "5." The top barrel flat is marked "HENRY'S PAT.OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." (recut) ahead of the rear sight and the non-matching serial number "7155" is stamped behind the rear sight at the breech. It has a fixed front barrel section. The serial number "4370" is stamped on the left side of the lower tang, on the upper tang cutout of the stock and on the buttplate. The barrel has provisions for a sling swivel on the left side. The left side of the stock has a sling swivel mount. Mounted with a walnut stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).

This classic "Yellow Boy" was manufactured in 1871. This model was the first true Winchester and was essentially an improved version of the Henry fitted with a loading gate. This basic pattern set the standard for lever action rifle designs for generations to come making a '66 carbine a must for any Winchester or American arms collector. The fact that they played an important role in the hands of civilians and Native Americans in the second half of the 19th century as more and more Americans settled in the West and disputes over the land festered further cements their importance to American history. Though other iconic models followed, the less expensive '66 remained in high demand until the end of the century and is now easily one of the most collectible Winchesters.

The box and ammunition are fair with wear and tear on the box and heavy oxidation on the ammunition. The sling is fair. The cleaning rod is fine.
