Winchester Model 1901 Lever Action Shotgun
Offered here is a spectacular first year production deluxe Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun. The Model 1901 was a redesign of the Model 1887 shotgun offered in 10 gauge only, and production serial numbers began at 64856. From 1901 to 1920 Winchester manufactured 13,500 Model 1901s with deluxe variations being extremely rare. This deluxe example was manufactured in 1901, the first year of production, and is in exceptional condition, making it a true crown jewel in Winchester collecting. Any high condition Model 1901 is difficult to find, let alone a deluxe, as Winchester had trouble with the heat treated receivers taking the blue finish. Moreover, this Model 1901 has an interesting factory record. The accompanying factory letter lists this rare Model 1901 shotgun with a 32 inch barrel in 10 gauge and checkered pistol grip stock when it was received in the warehouse on October 18, 1901 and shipped on October 21 (order number 113951). The shotgun returned to the warehouse on November 20, 1901 and shipped the next day with the configuration listed as "10 gauge, 32 inches, fancy, checkered stock" (order number 123701). The factory records list a third and final ship date of September 2, 1902 (order number 153963). Winchester firearms with multiple return and ship dates were often used as factory display pieces. The Pan-American Exposition, for instance, was held in Buffalo, New York, from May 1-November 2, 1901. The first block of dates listed in the factory letter makes it possible that this shotgun was on display for the last month at this New York exhibition. The shotgun features a single bead sights, full choke, 3 inch chamber, and 12 15/16 inches. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/patent dates followed by "MODEL 01. 10 GA". The left side of the frame has the ''WRA CO." logo and the upper tang is marked "-WINCHESTER-." The two piece forearm and round knob pistol grip stock are checkered deluxe walnut. The stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate.

JR Platt Texas Rangers The Continental Double Barrel Shotgun
These shotguns were made in Belgium by Simonis, Janssen & Dumoulin. The underside of the barrels and watertable have matching serial numbers and Belgian proofs (pre-1893 style). The watertable and right lock also have patent markings, most clearly "Patd. June 20 1883" on the lock. The left lock is marked "The Continental." The matted, concave rib is marked "THE CONTINENTAL-.-FINE DAMASCUS" and has "J R PLATT TEXAS RANGERS" in gold inlay and a single bead front sight. The forearm and round knob pistol grip stock are checkered, the former features a contrasting tip, and the latter has a hard rubber buttplate embossed with a basketweave pattern and scene of a dog, shotgun, and shot birds. The chambers measure 3 inches with a single extractor, the choke constrictions measured .015/.006 (R/L) inches. Stock measurements: 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 3/4 inch drop at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull. John Radcliff Platt (1862-1911) was one of the several Platt brothers that served in the Texas Rangers in the late 19th century. Their father, Captain Radcliff Platt (1822-1909), is also listed as having served as a mounted volunteer during the Mexican-American War and was a sheriff, farmer, and livery stable owner in Austin. J.R. Platt worked in the stable before he enlisted in the Texas Rangers on June 20, 1886, as a private in the Frontier Batallion in Captain Sam McMurry's Company, and left the Texas Rangers on August 31, 1891. Prior to working as a ranger, he was recorded as working in a stable. The Frontier Battalion was tasked with protecting the Texas frontier from Native American raids and outlaws starting in 1874 at the end of the Reconstruction era in Texas. Texas was very rural at the time and hampered by the depressions of the late 19th century and labor conflicts, and part of Captain McMurry's Company's duty included dealing with labor disputes at the Texas & Pacific Coal Company in Erah County.

Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Primed Double Barrel Shotgun
Very little is known about these rare Mass. Arms Co. Maynard muzzleloading double barrel shotguns. They were presumably made in the 1850s, but must have been manufactured in very limited numbers given the small number that have surfaced, and we have seen less than a handful. They are discussed briefly in the article "The Design, Marketing and Production of Maynard Rifles" by Max W. Goodwin in the American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin 88 from Fall 2003 and a similar example from the NRA National Firearms Museum is shown. The shotgun is currently improperly listed on the NRA Museum website in case 11 as a converted musket and is very similar to the current shotgun but is in lower condition. The back action locks have "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" behind the hammers, "MAYNARD'S PATENT/SEP. 22. 1845" on the primer doors, and scroll engraving. The Damascus barrels have a bead front sight and "LONDON. FINE TWIST." on the concave rib. The underside of the rib and the breech plug hooks are marked "43," and the barrels have Birmingham proofs. The furniture has scroll, floral, and entwining pattern engraving. The stock has nickel-silver wedge escutcheons, a checkered wrist, a blank nickel-silver escutcheon on the bottom of the butt, and a 14 1/2 inch length of pull. The case contains several accessories, including leather shot and powder flasks.

Colt Deluxe New Model 1855 Percussion Revolving 10 Gauge Shotgun
Only an estimated 1,100 of these revolving shotguns were manufactured c. 1860-1863 split between 10 gauge (.75 caliber) large frame and 20 gauge (.60 caliber) small frame versions and multiple configurations. An estimated 600 were manufactured in 10 gauge ranking them among the rarest Colt percussion firearms. In the days when most shotguns were single or double barrel, the five-shot Colt revolving shotguns offered a significant amount of firepower. The barrel is numbered "122" on the bottom and has a small nickel-silver bead front sight and under-rib with the cleaning rod secured in two ferrules and a walnut forearm with silver plated forend cap. The frame has "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." marked in the sight groove on the top strap, the serial number on the bottom, a casehardened hammer, and the patent marking on the left. It is fitted with an attractive scroll pattern trigger guard. The cylinder has the patent marking in one of the flutes. The nicely figured buttstock has multi-point checkering, "COLT" stamped behind the lower tang, steel buttplate, and brass rod extension under the buttplate. There is a sling swivel eye on the rear ferrule but no corresponding rear stud or swivel.

Piraube 1699 Dated Parisian 20-Bore Flintlock Fowling Piece
This attractive French fowling piece is signed "PIRAVBE AVX/GALLERIES A PARIS" on the lock and "PIRAVBE AVX GALLERIES A PARIS 1699" on the raised sighting flats on the barrel. Bertrand Piraube is recorded as the gunmaker to "The Sun King," King Louis XIV, and as having been granted prestigious lodgings in the Louvre Palace from 1670 when additional artists were granted space in the former royal palace after the court moved to Versailles and remained there until 1725. He was an innovative gunmaker; the flatter profile of the lock and other details on this gun dated 1699 were not employed by most other gunmakers until later. He also made guns for royalty outside of France, including a flintlock pistol made for King Charles XI of Sweden in 1676 in the MET (Accession Number: 1990.114.2) that is notes as the earliest dated firearm by him. The tapered smoothbore barrel has a large rounded blade front sight, long sighting flats, with decorative engraved finials, some nice molding along the sides at the breech section along with border engraving and girdles at the breech end, and engraved tang with mostly a border design. The flat lock plate has beveled edges, a bow and quiver of arrows on the tail, wavy line borders, scrollwork on the cock, some nice sculpting and light engraving on the frizzen, and niter blued pan. The furniture is all iron and includes floral finials and accents, light border engraving, and fairly restrained embellishment overall. The wrist escutcheon is a pierced design with a crown and grotesque mask. The buttplate is marked "No: 26" by the toe. The nicely figured walnut stock runs to the muzzle and has fine molding, raised relief scroll carving incorporating mask elements, and nicely shaped flats and comb with spire accents. A William Keith Neal Collection tag marked "G176" is included. Provenance: The Collection of William Keith Neal; The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr

J.G. Dachtine Waterproof Enclosed Lock Flintlock Sporting Gun
This gun is based on Henry Nock, William Jover, and John Green's patent 1095 from April 8, 1775, for a "lock of which is so concealed that there is not the least appearance of it on the outside, nor any spark of fire or smoke arises from the same which will in any respect affect or obstruct the sight of the object..." and claimed that firearms using this design could be used in inclement weather without issue and even left in the rain for a whole day and then fired without re-priming. Variations based on their design outside of the U.K. are known, including examples in Army Museum in Lisbon and the Musee de l'Armee in Paris. This c. 1780 sporting gun lacks their patented gas/smoke escape tube and is featured on pages 258 and 259 of "The Visser Collection" Vol. 1, Part 4. Its two-stage barrel has straight rifling with some narrower grooves only at the muzzle. The breech section also forms the lower section of the action and is engraved with scroll, floral, and shell engraving and features girdles at the transition point and a decorative band at the breech. The upper ramrod ferrule is fitted to the bottom of the barrel, and a pierce iron barrel band with double headed Reichsadler and scroll pattern holds the forearm. The action is engraved with ornate rococo style scroll and floral engraving along with scenes of animals. The right side is signed "J*G* DACHTINE," and the left has "A*AIX*LACHAPELLE." Pressing a stud on the right pops open the top cover revealing the flintlock mechanism inside. The lid has coordinating engraving and features the dished rear sight which slides and engages the top edge of the frizzen. The stock and forearm have light molding and carved accents and a gracefully shaped cheekpiece. The iron buttplate is engraved en suite with the action. Provenance: The H.L. Manufactured in 1922. Single steel front sight bead. The action bar is roll-stamped "MODEL 97/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S.PAT.OFF. & FNG."" in three lines, and the barrel is marked "12 GA." and "CYL" along with the Winchester address and patent information. Mounted with an 18-groove forend and smooth pistol grip stock fitted with a checkered hard rubber Winchester buttplate. No U.S. Ordnance or departmental markings are present on the gun, however it is very likely that this gun was ordered by a police department given the popularity of these riot configuration guns for use in close quarters in the lawless prohibition era before the, now common, less than lethal means of today. Whatever the history of this gun, it is clear that it has been extremely well taken care of due to the outstanding condition. Length of pull is 13 7/8 inches.

Lot 297
World War II Stevens 520-30 Trench Shotgun
A martial variant of a John Browning designed sport gun, the 520 trench shotgun was originally developed in response to a World War I request for new fighting shotguns for the American Expeditionary Force. It made a strong impression on the evaluators but did not make it into the field before the armistice was signed. Seeing potential for the gun on the police market, Stevens kept production going until 1932, and at the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. government bought every 520 that was still in the warehouse. Checked back into the arsenals at the end of the war, many were sent back into the field for the Korean War and Vietnam. Correct bayonet lug adapter and ventilated handguard. The right side of the barrel has the three-line Stevens Company address. The left side has the two-line gauge markings "PROOF TESTED-12 GAUGE/-2 3/4 INCH CHAMBER-". Choke gauges at cylinder. The left side of the receiver is stamped "MOD. 520-30", and it has the correct "P/Ordnance Bomb" proof on the barrel and right front edge of the receiver. It has an all blue finish with smooth forearm and pistol grip stock with a black plastic buttplate. The stock and bayonet lug are correctly fitted with sling swivels. "SIL" stamped on the bottom of the pistol grip. Length of pull is 14 inches. Includes a MILSCO M1907 leather sling. Provenance: The Steven Preston Military Collection

WWII U.S. Winchester 12 Trench Shotgun with Bayonet and Ammo
This is a spectacular example of a rare, World War II, all parkerized Winchester Model 12 trench gun. The Winchester Model 12 and Model 97 trench shotguns were the primary U.S. combat shotguns used in World War II and Korea and even into Vietnam by both the U.S. Marine Corps and Army. Original, unaltered World War II examples are extremely rare today given almost all were rebuilt and reparkerized over time. The barrel is roll stamped with the two line Winchester address/patent dates followed by "-WINCHESTER-/-TRADE MARK-" and "MODEL 12-12 GA.-2 3/4 CHAM./CYL." The top breech end of the barrel has a small Ordnance Dept. "Shell and Flame" insignia and the bottom is "43" dated. Both the barrel and front edge of the receiver are stamped with the circled Winchester "WP" factory proofmark. Remington-UMC Model 10-R Slide Action Riot Shotgun
This is a very fine example of a scarce Remington/UMC Model 10-R, factory built as a riot shotgun. A small amount of these Model 10-R riot shotguns were sold to the U.S. Military for use in World War I, with this example void of any U.S. markings and likely sold commercially. The Remington Model 10 shotgun was originally designed by the well respected engineer John Pedersen. Serial number "U/160733" marked on the front underside of the receiver. The barrel is correctly roll marked with the Remington circled "REP" factory proof along with "160773" (very likely a factory error with the fifth digit incorrectly a "7") marked upside down on the lower right rear side of the breech. The top of the barrel is correctly marked "MODEL 10-R" ahead of the three-line Remington-UMC address and patent markings. Vietnam Era U.S. Stevens Model 77E Slide Action Riot Shotgun
Originally developed with an eye for arming the people of Southeast Asia against the communists, the United States Army and Marine Corps both took an interest in the 77E as a replacement for their aging stocks of World War I and World War II vintage trench and riot guns. The 77E became very popular as an "anti-ambush" gun in the jungles, as it was capable of delivering immediate and vicious fire at close ranges. While one of the signature weapons of the Vietnam War, relatively few can be found on the American market today in any condition. Single nickel bead sight, a full choke and a 2 3/4 inch chamber. The frame is marked "U.S." on the right, with "P" on the upper right side and on the breech of the barrel, and South Carolina Highway Department marking "SCHD" added to the right of the frame at the stock junction. Documented U.S.M.C. Trials Remington 870 Mark 1 Trench Shotgun
This is an extremely rare Vietnam issue Model 870 Mark 1 shotgun. Officially adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps in Spring of 1969 after extensive trials at Quantico, signing a contract with Remington on May 13, 1969 for 3,230 Mark 1 shotguns. The contract delivered 870 Mark 1 shotguns are noted in the serial range S08134V-S127697V, in which this example is bearing its own special serial number in a different range which is explained in its included letter of provenance from previous owner and retired Remington Arms Company employee, William H. Forson, Jr., who held a number of different important managerial job titles with the company. In his letter, it states, "I recall Norm [Remington coworker that was Manager of Law Enforcement and Government Sales] telling me about the Mark I and the Marine Corps contract. This shotgun was likely from the trial and pilot run at Ilion and Norm ended up with it." In the book "United States Combat Shotguns" by Bruce Canfield (pg 155) it states "One of the earliest combat uses of the Mark 1 was in the hands of the Marines during the Mayaguez affair. This incident occurred in May of 1975 during which an American ship was captured in international waters by hostile Cambodians. The Mark 1 was a key weapon employed by the Marine boarding party which retook the ship and the subsequent operations against the Cambodians on a nearby island. From all indications, the Model 870 Mark 1 immediately proved its worth as a combat weapon." Equipped with blade front and express adjustable rear sights. This shotgun features a parkerized finish, bayonet adapter for mounting the M7 bayonet as used on the M16 rifle, and is the first military issued shotgun with a seven-round magazine extension. Left side of barrel marked "12 GA. FOR 2 3/4 OR SHORTER SHELLS" and modified choke marking at the left of the breech. Right side of barrel marked with two-line Remington address and patents. Left side of receiver marked "Remington/1242256V" and "Wingmaster/MODEL 870". Smooth oil finished forearm and pistol grip stock with a black plastic serrated buttplate. 14 inch length of pull. Also includes an olive drab green canvas web sling, M7 bayonet, and a copy of a Remington Ilion shipping report listing the breakdown of firearms shipment totals by year with 3,231 contract delivered shotguns highlighted for the year 1969.

Vietnam Era U.S. Winchester 1200 Trench Shotgun with Accessories
These were the standard commercial Winchester Model 1200 shotguns produced during the late 1960s and early-mid 1970s that were purchased and adapted for the military with a bayonet lug/heat shield and U.S. marked. By the time most of these were delivered to the U.S. Military, the Vietnam War was nearing its end and very few are believed to have made it overseas to Southeast Asia. Some of these remained in service and saw use in Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Most were destroyed after their service, lending to their scarcity today, with sparse government records of contract deliveries. The barrel is equipped with a six hole pattern heat shield with the bayonet lug adapter, marked with part number "11686389", on the front end that is secured to the barrel with three screws. The bayonet lug on this shotgun is sized for the M1917 bayonet, which remained in service through the time this gun would have been in use. The barrel is marked for cylinder choke and a 2 3/4 inch chamber, with "U.S." above the standard markings, and the frame is marked "U.S." on the underside below the serial number and "AAD 10-88" on the bottom left edge, likely an Augusta Arsenal rebuild mark. Blue/black anodized alloy frame, parkerized steel barrel, magazine tube, heat shield, bayonet adapter, loading gate and bolt. Fitted with an extended forearm and pistol grip stock with a black plastic buttplate. 14 inch length of pull. Includes a correct Vietnam era Gen Cut M1917 parkerized bayonet with black plastic grips, olive drab green plastic scabbard, olive drab green canvas sling, U.S. Army Technical Manual TM 9-1005-303-14 and a sealed ten round box of Winchester 00 buckshot XM162 12 gauge Vietnam era ammunition.

Winchester 28 Ga. Model 21 Grand American Shotgun 2 Barrel Set
This is a rare example of a purpose built, lightweight, 28 gauge Model 21 as most of the 28 gauge 21s were built using 20 gauge barrel blanks bored to 28, making them heavy and unwieldy. According to an included copy of a document from late Winchester employee and Model 21 expert Edward E. Ulrich an estimated 7-10 guns were built with these lighter tapered barrels near the end of production. Blued Winchester Proof Steel barrels with single red bead sights on the matted, vent rib which is marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER", standard barrel markings, 3 3/4 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving at either breech, chokes marked "IMP CYL"/"MOD", and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The blued boxlock action displays gorgeous Grand American pattern engraving consisting of near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding four gold inlaid game scenes. The left shows a setter in a field scene, the right has a pointer in a field scene, and the underside shows a pair of pheasant in an upland scene all rendered in highly detailed gold inlays as well as a non-gold inlaid bust of a setter on the trigger guard. The gun features a gold plated single selective trigger and tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE". Exceptional, highly figured, 21-B pattern fancy fleur-de-lis checkered beavertail forend with engraved fittings, rotary latch release, and ebony tip inlay. The pistol grip stock is of the same exceptional quality with matching fleur-de-lis checkering and engraved and gold inlaid "GRAND/AMERICAN" grip cap, blank gold inscription oval, and checkered bare butt. Included is a second 28 inch barrel set in .410 with matching serial number and engraving, 3 inch chambers with ejectors, chokes marked "WS-1"/"WS-2", and matching beavertail forend. Included is a Winchester leather bound takedown case with canvas cover, four snap caps (two 28 gauge, two .410 bore), cleaning tools, two hang tags, a copy of Edward E. Ulrich's Olin ID, and an excerpt from an autobiographical article in the Autumn 1999 issue of "Double Gun Journal".
