Description:

Manufactured in 1861. The top barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach holdup scene and is marked "COLTS PATENT" above the matching serial number. Complete matching serial number on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap, partial number "3528" on the cylinder pin and loading lever, and "93528" on the wedge. A "4" is struck over the 5 on the trigger guard and back strap serial numbers. The butt in inscribed "Wm. Kinne". Research shows William W. Kinne enlisted in the 90th New York Infantry as an Assistant Surgeon, commissioned by the governor of New York on December 20, 1861. The unit was almost immediately send to Key West, Florida, remaining until late 1862. Kinne apparently contracted a tropical type fever and petitioned for reassignment to the north. In May of 1862 he was granted a 30 day leave to return to New York to recover his health, but instead he resigned on June 20, 1862 and was honorably discharged. It's uncertain if Kinne was involved in any active fighting. Blue barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever, and silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. Fitted with a one-piece varnished walnut grip. Complete in a burgundy velvet lined mahogany case with locking lid and five compartments with an eagle/shield motif powder flask, two chamber "COLT'S/PATENT" marked brass bullet mold, several loose bullets and a partially full W&C Eley cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with scattered minor flaking and edge wear. The cylinder retains 60% original blue finish and shows a clear scene. The frame and hammer retain 80% original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. 95% original silver plating remains on the trigger guard and back strap and is beginning to darken with age. Loss is limited to the edges. The grips are excellent with 95% original varnish remaining, and showing some mild wear on the lower edges, and a few very minor dings and handling marks. The case is very good with a large circular stain on the lid, a couple cracks on the bottom, and overall some minor dings and scratches. The lining is faded and shows some contact wear and some fraying. The accessories are all very good.
