Description:

This revolver was manufactured between 1861 and 1863 by the Moore's Patent Firearms Co. of Brooklyn, New York, before the firm lost an infringement suit brought by Smith & Wesson. It has the standard factory style scroll engraving with punch dot backgrounds, the one-line More patent marking on the top of the barrel, a brass cone front sight, hammer notch for a rear sight and one-piece walnut grip. The bottom of the barrel is numbered "4226" while the cylinder is stamped "48" and the front strap and grip are stamped "48 0". The back strap is inscribed "Chicago Fire Department to John C. Harrington" in script. The revolver was likely given to Harrington as a reward for his actions as discussed in James B. Swan's work Chicago's Irish Legion: The 90th Illinois Volunteers in the Civil War. In one section Swan discusses that Harrington was a member of the Chicago Fire Department at the outbreak of the war. While stationed in Chicago, Harrington as first lieutenant of Company C stepped in to protect a crew of firemen from a group of paroled Vermont soldiers who were causing mayhem as a result of deplorable barracks conditions. They had set fire to their barracks and had proceeded to attack the responding firemen prior to Harrington drawing a revolver and threatening to shoot the next man who stepped forward. He then escorted the firemen to safety. "Quartermaster Sheridan described him as 'one of the most powerful men physically that I ever knew.'" Harrington was wounded in battle while leading his men later in the war and had reached the rank of Captain prior to resigning in 1864.

Rating Definition:

Good as period modified (barrel shortened). The revolver displays a gray patina on the barrel and cylinder and an aged patina on the frame with some traces of the original silver plating and minor marks and light spotting. The engraving patterns and markings are clear. The grip is very good with some small chips and pressure marks. The action is excellent but the ejector rod is absent. Overall a solid example of a Civil War Era weapon connected to a patriot and hero.
