Description:

The Model 1842s were the last smoothbore muskets manufactured by the U.S. national armories, and were used in the Civil War. They were manufactured with thicker barrels on the assumption that many would eventually be rifled, and many were during their service life, making original smoothbore examples like this one in high condition very desirable. This model was the first manufactured by both Springfield and Harpers Ferry with fully interchangeable parts. This "1853" dated example has standard markings and features and includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued overall with mostly bright metal surfaces, scattered minor nicks and scratches, and some faint spotting. The bayonet is also in similar near mint condition. The markings, including the stock cartouche, are crisp. The stock has some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
