Description:

This is an attractive example of an early production Model 1903 Springfield rifle that was manufactured in 1907 that has been fitted with a fully figured, tiger stripped pattern walnut buttstock. These fully figured stocks are seldom encountered as they had a tendency to warp and/or split over time, so they were not favored for service rifles. It has the standard five-line receiver markings over serial number "182222" and the original barrel is marked "SA/3-07", indicating manufacture in early 1907. The stock is the correct early, NO-Bolt "S" pattern with finger grooves on the sides, with the correct early no-clip handguard without the sighting groove down the top. It is correctly stamped with a small "s" at the rear in front of the rear sight. It has the standard front sight with the early pattern 2,400 yard rear sight with the bright polish face with the small platinum sighting line at the bottom, with the grooved windage and elevation knobs. All correct early features. It has the correct all milled components with a late 1918/19 pattern RIA manufactured bolt that is stamped with "NS" on the under side of the safety lug with the slightly swept back handle. It comes with a original 1918 dated leather sling and a early M1905 pattern bayonet and first pattern scabbard. The bayonet is stamped "SA/1906" at the hilt and the obverse is stamped "U.S./270215" and the scabbard is stamped "RIA/1906/US" on the back side. Provenance: The George Moller Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled with 75% plus of the faded arsenal blued finish on the metal parts with the rear sight base having browned out on the sides mixed with browning on the floorplate. The entire bolt body has been polished removing the blue finish. The stock and handguard are both in very fine condition with only minor handling marks on the sides with a slightly darker tone on the top of the handguard. the bayonet is in very good condition with clear markings however the blade has been repolished. The scabbard is in fair condition with no blue finish on the metal throat with the leather section showing wear, gouges and a darkening of the leather.
