Colt Paterson Percussion Revolving Carbine with "WAT" Cartouche
This incredibly rare Colt Model 1839 carbine has the "WAT" inspector's cartouche of U.S. Ordnance Inspector William A. Thornton (1802-1866). Thornton graduated from West Point in 1825 and served during the Black Hawk War before working in the Ordnance Department as an inspector until his death in 1866. His cartouche is found on the 360 Paterson carbines purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department. Many of these carbines were used during the Second Seminole War in Florida and relatively few survive. These smoothbore carbines are identified as manufactured in .525 caliber (32 bore). The carbine is numbered "436" on the rear of the cylinder and on the turning ring, "384" on the turning ring retainer, and "332" on the buttplate. Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection

James Purdey & Sons 10 Gauge Self-Opening Sidelock Shotgun
The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed on August 17, 1906 for an O. Heriot as the No. 1 of a pair of hammerless ejector game guns with 30 inch Whitworth Steel barrels and chambered for the 10 gauge 2 5/8 inch case. The barrels show the original London nitro proof marks on the flats along with an import marking under the forend. The Beesley patent action displays Purdey's classic bouquet and scroll engraving. The wood is attractively figured with a comb section spliced onto the stock. Gold inlaid "1"s on the barrel rib, toplever, and forend indicate the gun was built as part of a set. With a wood and leather takedown case marked "G.J.B" on the lid and a pair of brass and horn snap caps. Chambers with ejectors marked for 1 5/8 oz. loads, chokes measured improved cylinder/modified, and 14 1/4" LOP.
