Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine
Manufactured in 1894 with the desirable casehardened receiver that was standard until approximately serial number 108000. According to John T. Madl in his summer 2018 article in "The Winchester Collector", only 1,416 Model 1886 carbines were manufactured in .40-82 W.C.F. The top of the barrel on this example is marked with the standard two-line Winchester address, and the caliber marking at the breech. Just below the address on the upper left of the barrel, the retailer marking "Juan Canedo y Cia Rivadavia 611-Buenos Aires" is hand engraved. Juan Canedo took over a large firearms retail business in Argentina from Don Alfredo Gottling, who started the business in 1857. It is reported that Canedo's firm operated into the 1970's and were known to be a major importer of the most advanced firearms models from North America and Europe. The upper tang is marked with the model designation and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

Gino Cargnel Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle
This Winchester Model 1873 is a second model manufactured in 1879 with a screw attached dust cover guide rail and has the appearance of being an extraordinarily high condition factory engraved special order Winchester. In his included signed letter, legendary American actor Tom Selleck states: "When I acquired Winchester 1873 #37643 it was well past any usefulness so I decided to undertake a complete restoration. My idea was to custom order a rifle to my specifications exactly as if the Winchester factory had done it. Roger Kurtz was the right guy to do it. Roger did all the work for the Cody Museum. Roger agreed, but only if he could make sure it was not confused with a factory lettered rifle. That speaks to just how good his work was. So Roger sent his own letter to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Roger was a friend, and he has passed away now. He was a master at his craft and I feel his work should be recognized so I'm happy to share my Roger Kurtz 'custom order' Winchester 1873 Deluxe Rifle." He also notes, "Roger always insisted on aging his Winchesters for accuracy before he would deliver one." A copy of the noted letter from Kurtz to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is included and states that the rifle was rebuilt for Tom Selleck with a 28 inch octagon barrel, caliber .44 W.C.F., full-length magazine tube, "XXX" fancy walnut forearm and stock with checkering and a 15 1/4 inch length of pull, a crescent buttplate, sling eyes, engraving by Gino Cargnel copied from original Winchester Model 1873 #30189, "T.W.S." engraved on the right side plate, a saddle ring, sporting front and early rear sight, a Lyman No. 1 tang sight, color casehardened finish, and a five-piece rod in the stock compartment. Kurtz indicates the rifle was completed on October 21, 1999. The rifle is exactly as described in the letter and is engraved at the muzzle, breech, forend cap, frame, dust cover, and buttplate. Most of the engraving is classic scrollwork with beaded backgrounds but the left side of the frame also features a stunning stag scene with a tree and mountain in the background and detailed foliage. Selleck's initials are engraved in a banner on the right behind the loading gate. Winchester Model 1873 #30189 that inspired the engraving is shown on page 186 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The right side appears to have been inspired by Model 1876 #4901 which can be seen on p. 201. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

Marlin Deluxe Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle
The accompanying factory letter confirms this exceptional Marlin Model 1881's 28 inch barrel in .40-60 caliber and the pistol grip stock as well as that this rifle was shipped on August 13, 1890. High end finishes were rarely noted in the Marlin factory records. The deluxe stock on this rifle is factory original. The Marlin Model 1881 was meant as a "working man's gun," and Marlin customers were generally not inclined to spend extra money on deluxe features, so very few Model 1881s left the factory with special order features, making examples like this one especially desirable. The Model 1881 was the first lever action introduced by Marlin, and only 20,535 were manufactured between 1881 and 1903 compared to 63,871 of the Winchester Model 1876 it competed with. The Marlin was the stronger gun and could chamber the popular .45-70 Govt. cartridge, and it found buyers in the American West as is clearly shown in advertisements in the Dakotas, Montana, and elsewhere in the 1880s. This rifle is fitted with a combination Beach front sight, an elevation adjustable rear sight, and a tang mounted mid-range Vernier peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "40 CAL" at the breech. The nicely figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The stock is fitted with a steel shotgun buttplate. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

Hopkins & Allen Army Model XL No. 8 Single Action Revolver
Approximately several hundred of these very scarce revolvers are estimated to have been manufactured from the late 1870s to early 1880s in several variations. This was one of many very competent competitors of the Colt Single Action Army in that American West that were simply out marketed and out manufactured by Colt. The top strap is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking along with "XL NO.8" over the caliber marking. Matching serial numbers are on the left side of the grip frame, inside both grip panels, and barrel. The XL Army and Navy are often considered to be the finest quality handguns made by Hopkins and Allen and would have been serviceable military sidearms though no government contracts are known. Chicago Firearms Protector Palm Pistol with Picture Box
The design dates to 1882 and originated with Jacques E. Turbiaux of France. They were also manufactured by the Minneapolis Firearms Co. before Peter H. Finnegan purchased the rights and established the Chicago Fire Arms Co. This pistol was manufactured c. 1893 in anticipation of sales at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago that year. Finnegan contracted the famous Ames Sword Co. to manufacture 15,000 of the pistols, but they failed to meet the delivery time and later accumulated many that they sold off themselves after legal proceedings. These innovative firearms would have been very convenient pocket pistols for those seeking compact and discreet sidearms. What they lacked in power, they made up with in concealability and versatility. The pistol is barely visible when in the shooter's hand and looks like a pocket watch at first glance. In fact, the Chicago Fire Arms Co. advertised them as "Carried in the vest pocket as easily as a watch" and advertised them particularly for gentlemen. This pistol would have been their $8 No. 2 style which was listed as "finely nickeled or blued, with pearl sides, polished..." It can be used as a pistol or as a "punch gun" since the pistol would likely fire if loaded and the user punched with it like a brass knuckle. This very high condition example has a floral pattern engraving around barrel and frame, "THE PROTECTOR PAT. MCH 6. 83. AUG. 29. 93." on the roundel at the center of the frame, knurling at the edge of the side plate which is marked "CHICAGO FIRE ARMS CO. CHICAGO, ILL.," beautiful pearl scales, and a checkered hard rubber grip pad. The pistol comes in a very scarce original "wood grain" picture box showing "THE IMPROVED PROTECTOR" and noting the design as a "DEFENSIVE" weapon that is "1 Compact 2 Light 3 Strong 4 Quick 5 Safe 6 Effective 7 Reliable." Colt "Omnipotent" Etched Panel Model 1878 Revolver
The Model 1878 was Colt’s first large frame double action revolver and, until recently, has been overshadowed by its legendary cousin, the Single Action Army. In the words of famed SAA expert and author John Kopec, “The Colt Model 1878 Double Action Army revolver has always held a more or less secondary place in the Colt collecting field. That is until now!” In recent years the Model 1878 has become increasingly popular with collectors who are rediscovering its legacy in Colt heritage and in U.S. history in general. Just like the SAA, the Model 1878 shaped American history out on the western frontier. The Model 1878 was used by settlers, lawmen and outlaws during America’s push to the West Coast. Its association with the Wild West alone has made the Model 1878 a very collectible American handgun. The Model 1878 has also found a special place with military collectors. The U.S. Ordnance Department purchased 4,600 Model 1878s known as the Philippine or Alaskan models, which saw action during the Philippine-American War and Moro Rebellion. High condition examples are catching the eye of serious collectors, especially those looking for rare variations such as this example. Offered here is one of less than 175 ”Omnipotent” marked Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolvers. The story of the Omnipotent marked Model 1878 is retold in Don Wilkerson’s seminal work “Colt’s Double-Action Revolver, Model of 1878,” and Wilkerson referred to these handguns as “among the most sought after revolvers by collectors today” (page 233). These incredibly rare revolvers feature an acid etched “OMNIPOTENT” panel on the left side of the barrel, just as featured on this example, and most “Omnipotent” marked Model 1878s were shipped to B. Kittredge & Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. Benjamin Kittredge is extremely important to the Colt legacy. In the 1870s and 1880s, Kittredge dominated the Colt retailer market. He is credited for coming up with at least nine Colt model trade names that included the now legendary names “Peacemaker” for the Single Action Army Revolver and “Lightning” and “Thunderer” for the .38 caliber and .41 caliber Model 1877 respectively. “Omnipotent” was Kittredge’s trade name for the Model 1878, and he had this name etched on the left side of the barrel. The first of these revolvers were shipped to Kittredge in August 1878. The last of these revolvers were shipped to Kittredge in May 1882. A very limited number of these revolvers were shipped to other dealers such as Hartley & Graham. The bulk of the “Omnipotent” revolvers were received by Kittredge. These revolvers came finished in blue or nickel with at least one nickel plated gun having a gold plated cylinder, grips varied from the standard hard rubber to more costly special order material like pearl, a few were even engraved, and in general they had 7 ½ inch barrels and were chambered in .45 caliber. Based on Wilkerson’s reading of the available factory records, “A total of 174 revolvers were shipped to Kittredge between the first Omnipotent marked invoice on August 6, 1878, and the last Omnipotent marked invoice on Mary 13, 1882. The author tends to think all of these revolvers were probably etched with the Omnipotent marking. If we count only those revolvers listed as Omnipotent in the records (the only revolvers that will definitely letter as Omnipotent) we have only 154 revolvers” (page 236). “Omnipotent” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “having complete or unlimited power,” often associated with deities. It is a name that truly fits the Model 1878 in powerful .45 caliber. Unfortunately, the “Omnipotent” trade name did not catch on like Peacemaker did for the SAA. The revolver was manufactured in 1878. As stated, the left side of the barrel has the incredibly rare “OMNIPOTENT” acid etched panel. The top of the barrel is stamped with the one-line Hartford address. “45 CAL” is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard. The full serial number appears on the butt ahead of the lanyard loop, and matching partial serial number "712" is found on the loading gate and on the rear cylinder face with the individual numbers stamped between the chambers. Both of the bird head grip panels are also numbered to the gun. Besides the matching serial number, the rear cylinder face is also stamped with a factory “T” inspection mark.
