Lot 517
Underwood - M1 Carbine
This is an outstanding, all original Presentation type M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the Underwood Elliott-Fisher Company that remains in its original unaltered, like-new condition. During the early days of WWII at the start of production, several companies that manufactured M1 Carbines for the military set aside/reserved a specific block of serial numbers usually with a letter prefix of an X, E or both, as preproduction examples or test models. Later at the end of WWII these serial number blocks were just used to present specific M1 Carbines to senior members of the military as well as Senior Executives or Corporate officials. This example is serial numbered "E 276" on the heal of the receiver denoting it was a presentation carbine. These carbines were assembled from left over military contract parts that used both early and late production parts and select stocks and handguard to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. It is estimated that approximately 50-100 carbines were manufactured by several companies, with the majority of the known examples manufactured by the Inland Division and Winchester Companies. So far we have only sold several examples in past auctions, so one will conclude that they are very rare. Any presentation example is highly sought by advance collectors today. This carbine has the standard "U.S. CARBINE/M1" markings on the front receiver ring with the rear area stamped "UNDERWOOD/E 276", and the barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD/9-42/Ordnance Shell and Flame insignia". It has a mix of early and late features such as the Type III receiver, the early barrel noted previously, which is fitted with a type III bayonet lug/barrel band. The receiver is fitted with a blued type 1 "U" marked, flat bolt and a late production adjustable stamped rear sight marked I.R. CO., on the side. It is also fitted with a type II operating rod slide with the square back cut, stamped "O.U." on the inside. It is fitted with a stamped and brazed trigger housing, with a smooth unmarked push-button safety and unmarked magazine release. It is fitted with a early high wood stock that has the mid-production oval cut, oiler slot that is stamped "M-U" in the sling slot and an early two-rivet "IO" marked handguard. This mix of early and late parts is exactly correct as they used whatever was left over after production ended. It does not include magazine or sling.

Irwin Pedersen - M1 Carbine
Fine example of a scarce Irwin-Pedersen manufactured M1 Carbine, that was manufactured in the second contract block of serial numbers (3,212,520-3,250,019). This block was later reassigned to the Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors after the Irwin-Pedersen contract was canceled for unsatisfactory performance. The receiver ring has the standard M1 Carbine markings with the rear stamped: "IRWIN-PEDERSEN/3212895". The barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD/3-43" above the ordnance '"shell & flame" insignia. It has a mix of early and late parts such as an "AI" stamped Type III barrel band late stamped, adjustable rear sight, stamped "IRCO" on the side, a flat "IO" marked Inland bolt, Inland marked trigger group, with an "AOB" marked slide. It is fitted with a low wood walnut stock that is stamped LW in the sling slot, with a boxed "BA/JPL" rebuild cartouche on the left side and a circled "P" proof on the flat of the pistol grip. It is fitted with an early two rivet, unmarked handguard. It comes with a reproduction green canvas sling and a 15-round "BW" marked magazine. The triggerguard bow has a small yellow sticker identifying it as being checked at the M1 Carbine matches at Camp Perry.

Lot 1407
Inland - M1A1
This is a very rare and certainly one of a kind late WWII M1A1 carbine that was produced by the Inland Division of General Motors and has a handwritten presentation inscription on the side of the stock from David Marshall (Carbine) Williams to a friend Donald Miller. The right side of the stock has been inscribed with the following: "To Donald Miller/From Carbine Williams Sept. 30-1968". Accompanying this carbine is a copy of a picture of Carbine Williams signing the carbine stock marked "to/Donald Miller/Every good wish/Carbine Williams/Dec. 29, 1964. The inscription was marked in the wood, with a ball-point pen and now the ink has evaporated away leaving only the marks in the wood. The actual carbine itself is a mid-WWII model manufactured in late 1943, that has been arsenal refurbished. The receiver ring is marked: "US CARBINE/CAL 30 M1" and INLAND DIV/2929382". The barrel is marked "INLAND MFG. DIV./GENERAL MOTORS/10-43". It has a low-wood stock with the folding buttplate has the correct cast in part number and leather cheek piece. The left side is stamped "AAM" for Augusta Arsenal, and a single uncircled "P" proof is on the pistol grip. The underside of the pistol grip is stamped with "R.I." indicating it is a Korean War replacement. It is still fitted with a type II barrel band, flat blued bolt, early smooth push button safety, late war underlined M magazine release. Two rivet handguard and a late war stamped adjustable rear sight. It comes with an olive green GI unmarked web sling. The magazine is marked "AI." This lot also includes 2 framed photos, 1 unframed, 1 hard cover book, 3 soft cover books and the "Carbine Williams" movie on DVD.
