Boss & Co. 20 Ga. Best Quality Assisted Opening Sidelock Shotgun
Boss & Co. is a name synonymous with quality, and as such they are among the most highly regarded names in the English arms trade. Every gun that they build is of the finest quality, making the title of author Donald Dallas' book ring true, "Boss & Co.: Best Gunmakers". A Boss & Co. brochure from the period this gun was built sums up their philosphy best: "We would say from the outset that we make only one grade of gun and have never placed a second quality make upon the market. This policy has enabled us to retain the services of the finest workmen in London, and to give them continuous employment. The advantages attending the production of best work only are manifold. There is no opportunity for the work of inferior men to be utilised in the economy of the workshop, which is frequently the case when more than one class of weapon is produced. The owner of a Boss & Co gun has the satisfaction of knowing that he has the best gun that money can buy, and that no one has a better gun. The Boss & Co gun has, therefore, always a standard value whether new or second hand. Our output is strictly limited according to the amont of first-class labour available." Blued steel barrels with a small post front sight (bead absent), a small sighting flat at the breech, "BOSS & Co., 13, DOVER STREET, PICCADILLY, LONDON, ENGLAND." marked on the upper barrel, London nitro proofs, scroll engraving at either side of the breech, and chambers proved at 2 1/2 inches with selective ejectors. The casehardened Boss patent sidelock action displays masterfully executed English style bouquet & scroll engraving which surrounds the Boss patent numbers on the triggerplate and both sides of the receiver as well as "BOSS & Co." signed on either lockplate. The wonderful engraving was likely executed by Jack G. Sumner who became Boss's full-time engraver in 1920 after returning from World War One. The exceptionally fine engraving extends to the toplever, triggerguard, and both of the tangs, both of which show engraved screw heads. The gun features a single non-selective trigger, gold inlaid cocking indicators, a right hand rolled triggerguard, and a tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE". Exquisite, highly figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings, including the Anson button release and Boss patent shoe, and straight grip stock with carved teardrop flats, inscription oval marked with the initials "F.A.M.", and a checkered bare butt. The gun was built at the start of the Golden Age of British gunmaking between 1926 and 1930 per page 325 of Donald Dallas' above mentioned book which also notes only 76 20-bore over/unders being produced by the company on page 318, with even fewer with a single trigger, making this a very hard to find best quality gun. Barrel and stock measurements for original set (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved at "20" (.615 inches) and measured .621/.621 inches; choke constriction .009/.004 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.027 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 5/16 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; weight 5 lbs. 7 oz.

King Louis Philippe I French Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun
This fascinating shotgun was commissioned in St. Etienne for presentation to King Louis Philippe I , the last French King following the July Revolution in 1830. The relief cast silver lion figural hammers use the lion's mouths as the striking point and have "EXULTAVIT/UT GIGAS..." (short for Psalm 18: "He rejoices like a giant/strong man to run the way") on the left with the lion stepping on the body of the serpent that is coming up a log and "VICIT LEO/DE TRIBU JUDA..." (short for Revelation/Apocalypse 5:5: "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah [aka Jesus Christ], the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”) with the lion stepping on the head of the snake wrapped around a log. The wrist escutcheon has "DE CINERE VITA" (From ashes, life) and a phoenix emerging from a fire in gold inlay. The inside of the buttplate's door has "COURAGE!/PRINCE/QUE/NOUS AIMONS/1830" (Courage! Prince that we love. 1830), "LOUIS VINCET NOTAIRE" on the left edge and "VILLE-FRANCHE (RHONE)" on the right edge (probably an engraver from the Villefranche-sur-Saone commune in the Rhone department of France), and the compartment has a matching Damascus nipple wrench with container in the handle and another Damascus container with gold inlays on the lids. The edges of the lock and furniture have borders with floral blooms and alternating gold star and scroll designs. The fences on the bolsters and borders of the triggers are also gilt. The stock has a floral pattern "checkering" on the forend and elaborate raised relief carving of two entwined snakes facing a bird (likely a phoenix) perched on an oak branch and staring down upon the snakes, a bird's head design on the front of the comb, and a curved cheek rest terminating in a floral motif. The barrel rib has "Parallelisme Parfait" (Perfect parallelism), and the underside of the barrels have French proofs, "MERLEY/*DUON*" (Augustin Merley-Duon was one of the best known barrel makers in St. Etienne), and what appears to be "REPOS." The standing breech has "*ROUX*/OFFREY" (possibly gunmakers Claude Roux or Jean Claude Roux and M. Offrey of St. Etienne) on the face between the hook slots. Louis Philippe I of France (1773-1850, reigned 1830-1848) was "First Prince of the Blood" in the House of Orleans and came to power during the July Revolution in 1830 after the downfall of his cousin Charles X and reigned until he was overthrown in the February 1848 Revolution. King Louis Philippe I was the last King and penultimate monarch of France. Antoine-Louis Barye designed "Lion with a Snake" in 1832 as a tribute to Louis Philippe's victory and also in reference to the constellations Leo and Hydra that were visible during the revolution. The king received the first cast. A lion battling a snake is also a symbol of good triumphing over evil. The bronze was well-received by the new king, and Barye was made a knight of the Legion of Honor. The phoenix on the wrist escutcheon and presumably the stock carving thus also represents the new king rising to power, and the serpents represent his enemies. In Genesis, a phoenix is the only animal in the Garden of Eden that refuses to eat the forbidden fruit and is given eternal life. In addition to the rebirth of France in the revolution, Louis Philippe may have been represented as a phoenix for resisting the temptation to rule as an absolute monarch and instead signing the Charter of 1830 limiting his power as "King of the French" rather than claiming the throne through divine right as "King of France." The strong Christian tones throughout are also interesting given the Charter of 1830 also removed Catholicism as the state religion, but the king remained a Catholic. Lancaster 20 Ga Rotary Underlever Four-Barrel Hammerless Shotgun
These four barrel shotguns evoke a wonderful reaction from nearly everyone in the collecting field, as they hearken back to the days when more fire power simply meant that the gun needed more barrels. Lancaster was famous for this design and employed it in shotguns like this one, a scant amount of rifles, and large bore pistols which were popular amongst military officers and the hunters of Africa and India. This gun was built in 1882 per the information given on pages 120-121 of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London" which also states that this is one of just 69 total four barrel rifles and shotguns completed. The gun is built with four Damascus steel barrels in a "square" configuration featuring a single nickel bead sight on the smooth top rib which is marked "CHARLES LANCASTER. 151 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. PATENT FOUR BARREL BREECHLOADING HAMMERLESS GUN." The barrels all show original London proof marks with later London reproof marks which list the chambers at 2 1/2 inches and a single extractor. The casehardened Jones underlever action displays light dot border engraving and is marked "CHARLES LANCASTER'S. PATENT./LONDON." on both sides. The standing breech is marked with with a single dot on the upper left firing pin, two on the upper right, three on the lower right, and four on the lower left indicating the firing order of the barrels. The gun features a tang mounted safety switch and a pair of triggers with the rear acting as the cocking piece while rotating the internal striker to the next barrel much like cocking the hammer on a revolver and the front trigger actually fires the striker, though also like a double action revolver the front trigger can be pulled all the way to complete both actions. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings and straight grip stock with silver inscription oval and an orange rubber recoil pad. Barrel and stock measurement (in firing order): bores nine inches from the breech measured at .619/.620/.620/.619 inches; choke constriction .005/.007/.006/.005 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/16 inch drop at heel; 15 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 10 oz.

Cosmi 20 Gauge Break Action Semi-Automatic Shotgun
Founded by Rudolfo Cosmi, the firm has built a reputation amongst shooters as a manufacturer of extremely well shooting guns over the years. Engraved Josef Just Sidelock Over/Under Combination Gun
The city of Ferlach, Austria, has long been a hub of the European arms trade and home to some of the finest gunmakers in Europe. At the end of World War II there were 56 gunsmiths in Ferlach, and by the time this gun was built in 2011 that number had fallen to just seven. Josef Just was among the best of the best, though, unfortunately the shops doors were closed in recent years with no one to carry on the business, making this a gun from the firms final chapter. The gun has blued Bohler steel barrels with a beaded blade front sight, flip up rear sight, and engraved and gold inlaid German claw mounts holding a Swarovski Habicht 6x42 Nova scope in engraved and gold inlaid mounts. There is also more fine engraving at the breech section which is bordered by gold. The shotgun barrel has a 3 inch chambers sharing a extractor with the rifle barrel and a choke constriction of .027 inches. The coin finished sidelock action displays fine floral scrollwork and gold inlaid scrolling line borders surrounding a set of three beautifully cut, deep relief game scenes. The scenes show a roe buck with his hinds and fauns in a forest setting on the right, a depiction of the goddess Diana bow drawn, and a mounted German huntsman with his hounds chasing a red stag in the forest. The engraving continues onto the pierced toplever, both tangs, and triggerguard which shows the bust of a roe buck. The gun features bushed firing pin, a single set front trigger, and an automatic tang mounted safety. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved and gold inlaid fittings, and the Bavarian style pistol grip stock with horn grip cap, raised cheekpiece, and a rubber recoil pad. Length of pull 14 9/16 inches. Weight 7 lbs. 15 oz. with scope.

The rear lump of the barrel is marked with the names "DANTE MARIO/GIAN POLI/REMO TONY". The coin finished sidelock action is a masterpiece carried out by Master Engraver Fausto Galeazzi. Lot 1616
Marlin Model 90 Shotgun Presented and Inscribed to Tom Mix
This shotgun was manufactured in 1937 for presentation to world famous American actor Tom Mix. Thomas Mix appeared in his first film in 1909 and soon rose to be the first of America's great Western film stars and "King of Cowboys." He appeared in 270+ films throughout his career spanning from the silent era into the early "talkies" and also directed and wrote. He was a real life cowboy. He was the son of a stable master and before his film career worked on a farm, served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War, was an award winning rodeo competitor, worked as a bronco buster at the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch, performed in Wild West Shows, served as a night marshal, and even rode in President Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural parade in 1905 along with Seth Bullock of Deadwood fame, and some of the Rough Riders. Mix was also a close personal friend of another of the America West's most famous lawmen: Wyatt Earp. He served as one of Earp's pallbearer's in 1929. Even as his film career took off, he continued to compete in rodeos and perform in Wild West Shows and circuses and was often injured during his on and off set performances. He retired from film work in 1935 and was killed in a tragic car accident near Tucson, Arizona, in 1940. This gun was one of the few guns given as presentation pieces by Marlin, the most notable other being the Ulrich engraved and gold plated Model 1897 rifle presented to world famous trick shooter Annie Oakley, which Rock Island Auction sold in December of 2019 for a whopping $575,000. The shotgun was presented to him for his work with the company on their gun handling and safety program for American youngsters as well as for his promotion of the Marlin Model 100-S "Tom Mix Special" rifle. The engraving was carried out by engravers Charles Preiss and Dan Cavanaugh, employees of Lehman Brothers Company located in New Haven, CT , according to William Brophy on page 610 of his book "Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company that Made Them." The gun is also pictured and discussed in the book in several locations, including pages 416, 540, and 610. Brophy believed that this is one of the premier pieces in Marlin collecting; to that end, it is the most pictured gun in his book, even more so than the Annie Oakley 1897. The shotgun's gold inlaid inscription is also illustrated on page 208 of "The Gun Digest Book of Single Action Revolvers" by Jack Lewis from 1982 which features a whole section on Mix as well as numerous other references to him. The book states that it was "presented by Marlin at the height of his career." It is also believed to be just one of only two Marlin presentation guns in private hands. The shotgun itself has blued steel barrels with single brass bead sight on a matted portion of the upper barrel, 2 3/4 inch chambers with a single extractor, and choke constrictions of .003/.006 inches. The blued action is engraved with floral scrollwork surrounding cowboys breaking broncos on the left-hand side and "Tom Mix" inlaid in fancy gold script on the right on a matted background with a cowboy hat, belt rig, and a single action revolver. The gun features a pair of triggers and an automatic tang mounted safety switch. Attractively, figured fleur-de-lis checkered walnut forend with engraved fittings and a pistol grip stock with a Red Head recoil pad.
