New Haven Arms Co. First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle
This is a solid example of a desirable First Model Henry Rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1863. The barrel has a German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated from one to nine hundred yards. The top of the brass frame has a dovetail slot positioned towards the hammer. The top barrel flat is stamped "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT.16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" ahead of the rear sight and the serial number "2658" is stamped at the breech. The serial number is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate, on the shanks of both buttplate screws, in the upper stock tang inlet and the left side of the lower tang. The left side of the barrel has a sling loop and the left side of the buttstock has a sling swivel. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock. The brass butt plate has the early rounded profile heel. Experts believe that most Henry Rifles manufactured before 1865 saw Civil War service. The Ordnance Department purchased about 900 Henry Rifles in 1863-1864 for issue to the 1st D.C. Cavalry Regiment and a small number in 1865 for issue to the Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiments. The majority of Henry Rifles were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the rifle's firepower and advanced design. Most of these soldiers were in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments in the Army of the Cumberland. Some western regiments, like the 66th Illinois Infantry, were primarily armed with privately purchased Henry Rifles.

Winchester 1866 Musket 44 RF
Manufactured in 1872, this is a desirable and fine example of a martially inspected Winchester Model 1866 lever action musket. The crisp script letter cartouche ("GHJ") is stamped on the left side of the buttstock. The Winchester Model 1866 musket was not documented to have ever been obtained by the U.S. military, but was sold to foreign militaries (France, Turkey, Mexico and Prussia). The cartouche, which is inside a ribbon, is indicative of "AOS" cartouches found on Argentine proofed 1866 carbines in the 135,000 to 148,000 serial number range. According to noted Winchester expert George Madis, "To date, no concrete evidence has appeared to explain the meaning of [AOS] markings." The same can be said about the cartouche found on this musket. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight and a small letter "J" at the breech. Fitted with a square base front sight/bayonet lug and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. It has the 7/8 magazine tube with three barrel bands. The middle barrel bands has a sling loop and the corresponding loop is located on the underside of the buttstock. The serial number is marked behind the trigger. The lower tang is marked with the small letters "PS." The wood is nicely figured straight grain American walnut with 3/4 length forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted with a brass buttplate featuring a trap compartment. The four piece cleaning rod is included.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Carbine 40
Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with 16-inch barrel manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1859. The carbine has a blued barrel, silver-plated receiver and crescent buttplate and casehardened lever and hammer. The stock is oil finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top and sides of the receiver and edges of the buttplate are decorated with open scrollwork, simple floral designs and border work. The engraving is period and similar but not identical to the typical factory engraving on Volcanic firearms. The carbine is accompanied by a letter from Winchester expert George Madis. The Madis' letter states that all the carbine's major parts are original, all the internal assembly/serial numbers match and that the barrel blue and silver plating are original. Madis describes the engraving on the receiver and buttplate as "early style engraving" and notes that it is of slightly higher quality than is typically found on New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic firearms. The barrel is the early "Type I" style with full rib and nickel-silver cone front sight. The top flat is lightly stamped "PATENT NEW HAVEN. CONN." in a single line. The receiver has a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel. The hammer has fine knurling on the spur. The serial number "2307" is stamped on the right side of the loading lever and on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock. The assembly number "14" is stamped on the right side of the lower tang and on the shank of all three of the hand-fitted tang screws. "H" is stamped on the left side of the tang ahead of the serial number and "X" is stamped on the left side of the lever. The stock is stamped "14" underneath the buttplate and "14" is stamped inside the buttplate heel. The top buttplate screw is brass and appears to be a period replacement.

There were actually only 133 Model 1873 1 of 1,000 rifles manufactured by Winchester, and according to "Winchester's New Model of 1873: A Tribute Vol. 2" by James Gordon only 63 were uncovered for their survey. This particularly rifle is noted on page 460 in their list of personal inscriptions by serial number and notes "I Flanders:" and "One of a Thousand." The personalized inscription is pictured on page 462. On page 382, the 1 of 1,000 marking is pictured, and the rifle is briefly discussed. It is also pictured and discussed in R. L. Wilson's "Winchester: The Golden Age of American Gunmaking and the Winchester 1 of 1000" on page 64. Based on the factory records surveyed by Gordon and Wilson, this rifle was the 9th 1 of 1,000 built and is one of only nine whose stock is not mentioned in the ledgers. All 1 of 1,000s were based on barrels selected as the best out of each thousand produced and received extra attention in fit and finishing. The factory letter confirms this rifle shipped on May 10, 1875, with the following features: rifle, 28 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, short magazine, "1 Of 1000," and "I Flanders." One other gun was with it in order number 3114. All of the features mentioned match the current configuration. It has "Ira Flanders" inscribed in script on the left side of the action, an unusually crude "1 of 1000" panel on the barrel at the breech (only example with this marking found), a half magazine, and a single set trigger. The dust cover is the correct early style with a checkered "thumb print" and is fitted to mortised guides in the top of the frame. The stock and forearm are smooth walnut, and the sights consist of standard German silver blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights on the barrel and a long range Vernier peep sight mounted on the upper tang. The included documents demonstrate that Ira Proctor Flanders (1831-1915) was a Civil War veteran from Plattsburgh, New York. He served in C Company of the 16th Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry briefly between August and December 1862 before being discharged due to disability relating to health issues commonly caused by dysentery and other ailments prevalent in the Civil War camps. He is listed as a blacksmith on his death certificate and in Federal Census records for 1870. In "Forest and Stream" Volume 7 from 1876 on page 128 is a Winchester advertisement which includes a target shot off-hand at 400 yards by Flanders in Saranac, New York, near Plattsburgh in July of 1875 with 8 bullseyes and two shots in the second ring in. The target was almost certainly shot with this very rifle given the shipping date on the letter and the renowned accuracy of the 1 of 1,000 rifles. Included with the lot is an oval sepia-tone portrait of a young man in an early 20th century military uniform with "163" one the shoulders.

Engraved Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle
This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle that was manufactured in 1888 and subsequently custom engraved and refurbished in the 20th century. The Cody Firearms Records Office serial number verification form indicates that this Model 1886 left the factory as a rifle with 45/90 caliber octagon barrel and plain trigger. The rifle was received in the warehouse on September 25, 1888 and shipped on October 2, 1888. The rifle has a 26-inch full octagon barrel with full length magazine, factory single set trigger and sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock. The barrel has a Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight marked "1886" at the top of the leaf. The top barrel flat has cross-checkered matting that covers the Winchester legend and obscures the caliber markings. The forearm and pistol grip stock are "XXXX" highly figured, fancy grain walnut with checkered forearm and pistol grip and a low-luster piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel, magazine, bolt, loading gate and trigger are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The receiver, bolt, hammer, lever, forearm cap and buttplate heel are engraved with flawlessly executed arabesque scrollwork and fancy borders. The engraving is similar in style and quality to Winchester factory work but lacks the game scenes found on most standard factory engraving. The left side of the lower tang is stamped with the assembly number "341" followed by "XXXX" and "SS". The assembly number "341" is also stamped in the upper tang inlet of the stock. A British "Crown/V" proof mark is stamped on the right side of the receiver and on the left side of the bolt. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886-" surrounded by engraved borders. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped behind the trigger on the lower tang. The serial number "23770" is engraved in script numerals on the lower tang and surrounded by scroll-work flourishes.

Winchester 1886 Rifle 45-70
The included factory letter confirms the rifle was originally chambered for .40-82 and had a special order 30 inch long octagon barrel with sporting leaf sight (notch and folding ladder), and plain trigger and also indicates the rifle was received on April 4, 1889, and shipped the same day with three other Model 1886 rifles in order 20295. The current 30 inch barrel has a German silver blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, standard address and patent markings, and is stamped ".45-70 W.C.F." at the breech. The Winchester Model 1886 was the first lever action designed by John M. Browning, and the popular Model 1892 was based on the same design but scaled down for smaller cartridges. The Model 1886 was very popular and could handle everything from .33 W.C.F. to large .50 caliber express cartridges making it one of the best firearms for big game hunting in its day. They also saw limited military use even into WWI when they were used with incendiary ammunition against German airships by the British Royal Flying Corps.

Fitted with a fancy walnut pistol grip stock with checkering at the wrist and forearm, a checkered Marlin buttplate, and a silver shield on the right side of the buttstock inscribed "Edward Field Goltra". Though not confirmed as belonging to him, research shows an Edward Field Goltra as a steel executive and prominent St Louis citizen during the early 20th century. (Of historic note, St. Louis held the World's Fair in the same year as this rifle was manufactured).

Winchester 1886-Carbine 45-90 WCF
The extraordinarily rare and desirable carbine was manufactured in 1898 as an exhibition piece. American firearms expert R. L. Wilson identifies the engraving as the work factory master engraver John Ulrich in the included letter and also states it was used at various exhibitions and displays. His evaluation notes that carbines were seldom engraved or received special finishes and confirms this carbine is distinguished by the rare combination of gold and nickel plated finish, deluxe checkered wood, factory engraving, and full documentation. Wilson notes that carbine #114695 (the consecutive gun to this example) is identically engraved and was also used by Winchester at various shows. The unique matching pair traveled together to some of the events given the matching shipping dates. The stock and forearm are “XX” fancy grade walnut with feathered figure Winchester Style "H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The receiver, bolt, and buttplate are factory engraved with scrollwork similar to Winchester No. 4 engraving. The left side of the receiver features a game scene that depicts a whitetail buck and doe in a forest setting, a panel scene not depicted anywhere in Wilson’s two books on Winchester engraving. A rarely seen S-scroll device is incorporated as part of the receiver engraving above the loading gate that Wilson indicates is a clear sign of the influence Gustave Young had on the Ulrich family’s engraving styles. The accompanying Winchester factory letter confirms the configuration, including the nickel and “gilt” finish and engraving. The letter notes this was a “show gun or sample,” states it was originally received in the warehouse on August 16, 1899, shipped on out on April 17, 1901, (odd given some dates listed below are earlier), and then “loaned out” on the following dates: Jan. 20, 1900; June 20, 1900; Dec. 4, 1901; March 29, 1902; March 14, 1904; Dec. 20, 1904; Dec. 21, 1904; Jan. 16, 1905; April 6, 1905; February 1, 1906; March 12, 1906; Oct. 2, 1906; Jan. 4, 1908; Feb. 27, 1908; March 4, 1910; and April 7, 1910. The letter also indicates it was sent on the following dates for “sample consignment”: Oct. 20, 1910, to Ambold Sporting Goods Co. in Waco, Texas; Jan. 10, 1911, to F. H. Siefren in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Feb. 24, 1912, to G. A. Davis “% WRA Co. of NY Inc.” (G. A. Davis is listed as the manager of the Atlantic Shipping Co. in New York suggesting the rifle was headed overseas); and June 21, 1912, “to Exhibition Showcase, Auditorium.” Many of these dates line up with the major world’s fairs and other international exhibitions of the early 20th century, including: Exposition Universelle in Paris (April-Nov. 1900), Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo (May-Nov. 1901), St. Louis World's Fair/Louisiana Purchase Exposition (April-Nov. 1904), Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Liège (April-Nov. 1905), Milan International Exposition (April-Nov. 1906), New Zealand International Exhibition in Christchurch (November 1906-April 1907), Franco-British “Great White City” Exhibition in London (May-October 1908), Exposition Universelle et Internationale in Brussels (April-Nov. 1910), International Mercantile Exposition in New York (1911), and Latin-British Exhibition at the "White City" in London (1912). At some events, such as the St. Louis World’s Fair, Winchester had multiple exhibits. Displays by American companies were not seen simply as advertisements but as patriotic symbols of American ingenuity and manufacturing prowess. Prominent companies were encouraged to participate at the various events around the world. The pre-WWI world fairs were massive events attended by millions and widely covered in the press. The carbine features the standard block style front sight, folding rear sight, “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PAT.OCT.14.1884.JAN.20.1885." in two lines ahead of the rear sight, "45-90/W.C.F.” at the breech, standard “WP” proofmarks at the breech, a saddle ring and stud on the left, standard “-MODEL 1886-“ model designation on the upper tang, and the patent markings and the serial number on the lower tang. Winchester would have happily added the “WP” proofmark when it was introduced in 1905 since they proudly proclaimed the marking was the “Hallmark of Quality.” It is perfectly normal for exhibition guns to have been maintained by the factory since they were handled potentially millions of times at a single event. The St. Louis World Fair, for example, recorded approximately 20 million visitors and the Exposition Universelle in Paris recorded approximately 50 million! We can only imagine the effect this fine carbine had on Winchester’s sales as an untold number of individuals from varying backgrounds viewed it.

Winchester 1892-Rifle 25-20 WCF
This special order Winchester Model 1892 Short Takedown Rifle was manufactured circa 1914. Unfortunately this is a "no record gun" in the factory ledgers. This rifle has what appears to be a factory gold inlaid border on the sides of the receiver. The left side of the receiver features again what appears to be a factory engraved "ACL" monogram. The rifle has a special order 20-inch octagon barrel and full-length magazine. In addition to the rare combination of a takedown rifle with short barrel, this rifle has a fancy grade, highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with Style H checkering and a high polish piano finish. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co." Other special order features include: double set triggers, sling swivel eyelets on the stock and forearm tip, folding combination tang sight, Winchester Express front sight with bright bead and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, bolt and crescent buttplate. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." ahead of the dovetail blank. The caliber designation "25-20 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The Winchester oval "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The serial number "785355" is stamped across the bottom of the receiver just behind the takedown collar. An accompanying Cody Firearms Museum serial number research request states that "no records" were found for this rifle. Model 1892 Short Rifles are rare and are seldom found with a takedown barrel. The addition of fancy grade walnut forearm and pistol grip stock combined with the other special order features and unusual gold inlaid border and factory engraved monogram make this a one-of-a-kind rifle.

Scarce Transitional Winchester Model 53 Lever Action Rifle
This Winchester rifle has the standard Model 53 features (22 inch barrel, six-shot magazine, straight grip stock, shotgun buttplate and ramp type front sight), but the serial number (975520) falls into the Model 1892 range. As noted by Winchester expert and author George Madis, the serial number "indicates that it is a transitional rifle, made shortly after the Model 53 was introduced…Serial numbers of the Model 53 were in a separate series except in the case of some early issues such as this." Introduced in 1924, the 53 was essentially a re-branded Model 1892. The rifle has a beaded front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight and button magazine. The left side of the barrel has the model (53)/trademark/nickel steel/caliber information and the right side has the two line address. The upper tang has the three-line trademark information and the barrel and receiver have a factory proof at the breech.
