Lot 1288
Brown Brothers Engraved P. V. Nelson Over/Under Shotgun
Rarely does a gun so fully embody the phrase "not all art is framed" in the way that this masterpiece does. This is an absolutely stunning display of Rococo style engraving that was carried out at the highest level by some of the most skilled hands to ever pick up a set of engraving tools. This work of art is built with blued steel barrels with single brass bead sight on the smooth solid rib which marked "P. V. NELSON, LONDON, ENGLAND." in gold inlay along with floral scroll engraving and a gold inlaid putto, grey finished sections at the breech with scroll engraving on a matted gold background, 1994 dated London proofs, and 70 mm (2 3/4 inch) chambers with automatic ejectors. The grey finished sidelock action displays full coverage scroll and Greco-Roman themed relief engraving over a matted gold background with "P. V. NELSON" in banners on either side in gold. The deep relief engraving extends to the trigger guard, toplever, and both tangs. The left lockplate appears to be inspired by the "Helios Relief" at Schloss Rosenstein (Ludwig Mack, 1830), the right lockplate shows a scene with a male and female figure, three putti, and a dog that appears to be based on the myth of Meleager and Atalanta and the Calydonian wild boar hunt (see for example "Meleager and Atalanta," Rijksmuseum, c. late 17th century), and the underside displays a fine rendition of "Neptune Calming the Waves" (Adam, 1733). The trigger guard shows Demeter holding her cornucopia, and the action is interspersed with putti and flowers all over the same matted gold background. All of the engraving is masterfully executed in beautiful detail that seems to pop off of the surface with its high contrast of grey and gold as well as its immaculate fitment to the shape of the gun and the natural flow of the actions lines. The engraving evokes the same emotion one may feel while standing in an 18th century French cathedral or when laying eyes on the Trevi Fountain for the first time. The gun is signed on both lockplates at the bottom of the scenes, "J. P. Brown" on the right and "A. M. Brown" on the left for the legendary Brown brothers John and Alan. The gun features a single trigger, rolled trigger guard, and tang mounted automatic safety switch. Beautiful, exhibition quality, fancy checkered forend with carved scroll borders surrounding the checkering and engraved fittings, including an extended forend shoe and the Anson button release. The straight grip stock is of equally high quality with the same checkering and carved scroll borders, teardrop flats, "RML" inscription oval in the same style of engraving, and coin finished buttplate with a scene based on "Boreas Abducting Oreithyia" (Giovanni Francesco Romanelli, 17th c.) and extended heel plate. Includes a March 1996 dated letter from Robert M. Lee on the ordering and payment of this and two other shotguns. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved at 18.5 mm (.728 inches) and measured at .728/.729 inches; choke constriction .009/.007 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.028 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 5/16 inch drop at heel; 14 1/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 13 oz. Lot 1290
Terzi Signed and Engraved C.S.M.C/Galazan Over/Under Shotgun
This provocative masterpiece is exceptionally well executed and showcases subject matter not often found on a high art firearm. The piece does not show the usual intricate English rose & scroll nor does it show traditional big game scenes, in fact quite the opposite. It flies in the face of tradition, evoking the nostalgia of a 1980s music video with sex, big hair, and big cats, making this a truly special piece. This gun is built with blued steel barrels with a single gold bead front sight on the matted solid rib, "A. GALAZAN" on the left side of the upper barrel, 3 inch wedges of gold inlaid stars showing over 100 individually cut stars on either side of the upper breech, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The blued sidelock action displays a mixture of gold inlaid floral vines, a gold line and star border, and highly detailed scenes of nude women and big cats. The scenes are rendered in relief cut and then enameled to give them vibrant full color and high detail showing of the attention to detail given to both the women and the cats. The left side shows a pair of nude women laying amongst a trio of adult tigers and a single cub, the underside has another pair of nude women kneeling beneath a songbird as well as a cougar on the trigger plate, and the right side shows yet another pair of nude women among a mated pair of lions with their two cubs. The areas in between the figures are filled with silver stars and gold inlaid vegetation. The top of the action shows more than 100 gold and silver stars, some of which are surrounded by a lattice work of fine gold. The gold inlay extends to the trigger guard, both tangs, and the toplever which shows a golden rising phoenix and yet more hand cut stars in an intricate golden flower design at the base. Both sides of the action are gold inlaid with "GALAZAN", and the trigger plate is signed "M Terzi" to the right of the trigger guard for Italian Master Engraver Mario Terzi, who has executed a true work of art that is surely worthy of display in any fine arms collection. The gun features a rolled trigger guard, single nitre blued trigger, and tang mounted manual safety switch. The stock and forend are of exhibition quality with gold bordered multi-point checkering and breathtakingly beautiful floral carving with intertwining multi-colored gold wire at the tip of the forend and just behind the stock wrist, the likes of which this writer has not seen before. A. Piardi and R. Roy Engraved C.S.M.C. 20 Gauge Fox Shotgun
There are few guns extant that could combine all of these fantastic styles of high art firearms decoration on one cohesive piece in the way that this gun has. The flow of this design from one style to the next is so seemlessly done it appears effortless, something that can only be acheived by the hands of true masters of their craft. This masteropiece was built with blued steel barrels with single white bead sight on the matted concave solid rib which shows gold inlaid scroll at the breech, "KRUPP-FLUID-STEEL" and MADE TO ORDER-A. H. FOX" marked on the right and left barrels respectively, single gold band at either breech, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The casehardened scalloped boxlock action displays a multitude of exceptional decoration and embellishment, including sculpted lines and fences, multi-color gold inlays, and a number of photo realistic and raised relief engravings. The entire action has been gold washed with the exception of the sculpting lines where the casehardened finish pops through creating wonderful sharp contrast. The left side of the action displays a pair of raised relief golden quail and a photo realistic pointer, the underside shows a quail and rooster pheasant, the right side shows multiple species of quail including bobwhite and Gambel's, close up quail on the pierced toplever, grouse and woodcock on the triggerguard, and a pair of quail on the lower tang. All of these engravings are surrounded by floral vines and both flush and raised relief flowers which are scattered throughout. The entirety of the decoration on this gun is rendered in fantastic high detail with and, simply put, is an absolute work of art. The work is signed "A.PIARDI Creative Art" on the triggerplate but some of the stunning work was also carried out by Master Engraver Richard Roy of Standard Manufacturing according to the included factory invoice. The exceptional decoration does not stop at the action, with the exhibition quality stock and forend showing an equal grade of fine embellishment. Both the forend and the straight grip stock show beautiful multi-point fleur-de-lis checkering and floral scroll carving all surrounded by gold inlaid wire borders which precisely follow the borders of both the checkering and the carving as well as raised floral gold inlays around many of the borders, extensively engraved Deeley style release, engraved and gold inlaid heel and toe plates, and fleur-de-lis checkered butt with yet another gold border. The aforementioned factory invoice states that the stock work was completed by Ron Buck.
