Marlin Firearms Co 1897-Rifle 22 RF
Marlin Model 1897 Lever-Action Rifle made circa 1898. The rifle has a 24" blued full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has a dovetail mounted "Jack Sight" with silver bead and sporting style rear sight. A folding peep rear sight is mounted on the tang. The forearm cap, frame, hammer and lever have a color casehardened finish. The receiver is decorated with Marlin factory "No. 3 Engraving". The left side of the frame is engraved with a game scene featuring two deer in an oval panel. The panel is surrounded by scroll work on a punch-dot background. The right side of the frame features Germanic scroll work on a punch-dot background. The game scene and scroll work are bordered with engraved panels. The engraving covers the side of the bolt, the top of the frame, the upper tang, lower frame behind the serial number and the forearm cap. The engraving is probably the work of Conrad F. Ulrich who executed most of Marlin's factory engraving between 1875 and 1913. The pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade, walnut with factory "No. C." checkered panels and a highly polished varnish finish. The shotgun buttplate is black, checkered, hard rubber embossed with the Marlin logo. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "Marlin Firearms Co. NEW-HAVEN, CT., U.S.A.,/PAT'D NOV.19.1878.APRIL 2.1889.AUG.12.1890.MAR.1.1892." with double arrows at either end of the legend. The caliber: "- 22.S.L. & LR-" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the frame. The top of the frame is roll-stamped "MARLIN SAFETY" with flourishes at either end and framed by an engraved panel. The serial number, "154715" is stamped on the front edge of the lower frame surrounded by engraved scrollwork. The upper tang markings are covered by the folding peep sight.

Lot 2
Marlin Firearms Co 1895 Carbine 45-70
Marlin manufactured only about 18,000 Model 1895 rifles and carbines, with this particular carbine manufactured in 1896 (possibly August). The Model 1895s were the answer to the Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle and although they never attained the same status as the Winchester rifles, some consider them to be better and stronger than the Winchester rifles. This carbine has the standard block base blade front sight and folding rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED.OCT. 11. 1887, APRIL 2. 1889, AUGUST 1. 1893" and "45-70" at the breech. The top of the receiver is script marked "MARLIN SAFETY", with the upper tang marked "MODEL / 1895". Standard full length magazine tube, saddle ring and staple on the left rear of the receiver, blue barrel and magazine tube, with casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Marlin Firearms Co 1897-Rifle 22 S L L R
This is a very fine example of a seldom found factory engraved Marlin Model that war manufactured around the turn of the century (1900). The receiver is finely engraved with scroll patterns with a curly line border. In addition there is a round panel on the left side with a buck in a wooded scene. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address/1878, '89, 90' and '92 patent dates, and the top of the round portion is marked "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL" with the "SPE" portion of this barely visible due to a weak roll die, i.e. factory error. "MARLIN SAFETY" is marked on top of the receiver with a scallop border and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame. Folding front globe sight, the rear sight is absent with a filler block in the dovetail and the upper tang is equipped with a short range peep sight. Full length magazine, blue half octagon barrel, magazine tube and forend cap, with casehardened finish on the remaining parts. Mounted with a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate.

New Haven Arms Company Henry Rifle
This Henry lever-action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1863. The rifle has the early pattern receiver with rear sight dove-tail and early style buttplate with rounded heel. The left side of the stock and left side of the barrel are factory fitted with a sling swivel and loop for a sling hook. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass receiver and buttplate. The hammer and loading lever have a case-hardened finish. The stock is walnut with a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight dove-tail. The serial number, "2975" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight dove-tail and the receiver. The serial number is stamped on the inside of the buttplate and on the shank of the lower buttplate screw. All of the visible serial numbers match. Most Henry rifles saw some service during the American Civil War. The Henry rifle was the most advanced repeating firearm manufactured between 1861-1865. Although the Ordnance Department purchased only about 1200 Henry rifles during the Civil War individual Federal soldiers appreciated the fire-power of the Henry. Large quantities of Henry rifles were purchased by soldiers from Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky in 1863 and 1864; these rifles saw service in the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. Henry rifles were understandably popular on the frontier following the war. As a result, Henry rifles tend to show the hard service associated with weapons that saw combat and daily use in a rugged environment. The rifle is complete with the four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod furnished with later production Henry rifles.
