The Model 1886 was very popular and could handle everything from .33 W.C.F. to large .50 caliber express cartridges making it one of the best firearms for big game hunting in its day. They also saw limited military use even into WWI when they were used with incendiary ammunition against German airships by the British Royal Flying Corps.

Winchester - 1894 rifle J. Lowe Gold Inlaid Engraved
Originally manufactured in 1902 and later gold inlaid and engraved by Master Engraver J. Lowe who was employed by New York City based luxury jewelry and specialty retailer Tiffany & Co. as late as 2013. Other known J. Lowe work of the same high caliber craftsmanship has been seen on Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. The rifle is equipped with a raised beaded blade front sight, an elevation adjustable King rear sight, half octagon barrel and 3/4 magazine tube. The barrel has the two-line New Haven address marking on the top flat ahead of the rear sight and "38-55" on the top flat at the breech, engraved scrollwork and double inlaid bands (one gold, one silver) at the breech and a single gold inlaid band at the muzzle. Note that the scrollwork on the receiver incorporates a large entwined geometric pattern on the left side. The sides of the receiver also have highly detailed gold inlaid woodland game scenes: a stag and doe on the left side and a moose on the right side. Gold inlaid line borders terminating in scrolls appear on the forend cap, takedown ring, receiver, bolt, hammer, carrier and lever. Additional gold inlaid line motifs appear on the carrier. The gold inlaid borders surround the game scenes depicted on the receiver. Additional engraved flourishes (e.g., simple floral and geometric motifs) appear on the forend cap, underside of the receiver, bolt and carrier. The lower tang is signed by Master Engraver J. Lowe just behind the trigger. The hammer and lever are casehardened. The takedown release is unmarked. Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Special Order Deluxe
This is a beautiful example of an unaltered Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1883 with many special order features. The factory letter confirms the configuration including the "Graduated Peep and Beach" sights, and indicates it was received in the warehouse and shipped on June 8, 1883, in order number 4785. The Model 1873 rifle was one of the most popular lever actions that Winchester ever manufactured. This is the "Gun that Won the West" and was probably the most highly used and most sought after favorite of cowboys, lawmen, outlaws and Indians alike. This specific rifle is actually a very early rifle and unbelievably remains in exceptional condition. This is a Third Model with the dust cover that operates on the central guide rail which was machined as part of the receiver. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860" ahead of the rear sight and "32-CAL" at the breech. New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle
This is an important example of an exhibition quality, factory engraved silver finished Henry rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in the early months of 1865 and is attributed to factory engraver Samuel Hoggson. The rifle has the later style receiver with no sight dovetail and later style buttplate with a more pointed heel. The barrel is the proper later variation fitted with the sight dovetail just behind the address, folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards and a German silver front sight with squared back. The rifle has a blued barrel, casehardened hammer and lever, and a silver plated frame and buttplate. The stock is a special select grade deluxe walnut with a high gloss finish. The left side of the stock has a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a loop for a sling hook. The rifle was engraved by Samuel J. Hoggson who was responsible for the majority of the factory engraved Henry Rifles. The engraving is a classic Hoggson pattern of an elaborate scrollwork on a punch dot background. The scrollwork is present on the top of the receiver, the tang, both side plates and extends to the buttplate. The right side of the frame features extensive scroll and punch dot patterns in a scalloped border. The left side of the frame exhibits a running deer and dog motif flanked by a scroll and punch dot background and framed with a scalloped border. See "Winchester Engraving" pg. 27 by R.L. Wilson for another similar example. The top barrel flat is roll stamped "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." Complete with four piece steel cleaning rod. Most of the approximately 9,000 Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between April 1862 and May 1865 were standard rifles intended for sale to individual soldiers or purchased by the Ordnance Department. Relatively few factory engraved Henry rifles were manufactured during the Civil War, and surviving examples are rare.
