Lot 1
British - Revolver
Discussed in Winant's "Firearms Curiosa", with an example pictured on page 159, the Frankenau was patented in both England and America in 1877, and performed double duty as a change purse and as a 5-shot defensive revolver. Though sights are not included, the typical armed robbery scenario (very short ranges and poor/non-existent light) renders the disadvantage moot, and the innocent appearance of the arm allows it to be brought into play on the pretence of surrendering it to the assailant. The outer case is silver finished brass with black leather side panels, marked "FRANKENAU'S PATENT." along the top, with a conventional spring-loaded pushbutton release on the top right, and a manually operated, flat-laying latch on the left. Pushing the button opens up a shallow but functional storage compartment, while the latch permits access to the main compartment and the revolver, which is marked with London proofs on the cylinder and a "crown/Z" on the rear. Also inside the compartment is a spring loaded retainer for an ejector rod (not included) and a series of holes in the lid near the muzzle and air gap, to permit the venting of gases after firing. The folding trigger is mounted on the underside, and is connected to a hinged muzzle cover on the front; opening one automatically opens the other, increasing the speed that the revolver can be brought into play.

E Carlstrom Sleeve Pistol 30 CF
This sleeve pistol was described in Elek B. Juhasy's August 27, 1929 patent as an "automatic concealed firearm for self defense." The rifled barrel unscrews for loading and fires a .30 caliber center fire cartridge. The pistol is fastened to a leather strap by a metal stiffener which is marked "PATENTED E. CARLSTROM CHICAGO/4852S MAY ST./U.S.A." The leather strap has elastic bands to fit around the forearm. A striker similar to that found on pen pistols is pulled back in order to cock the gun. The striker is released when the operator pulls back on a wire that is attached to a ring on the middle finger by flipping the hand upwards. The pistol has a two piece black box. This pistol is described in Lewis Winant's book FIREARMS CURIOSA, pages 161-162.

Rare James Reid New Model Knuckle Duster Single Action Revolver
Also known as the "Protector", this model was manufactured in 1883 with a total production of only about 360. All of the New Model Knuckle Duster fall in the serial number range of about 18240 to 18600. The iron frame is a partial reversion to the Knuckle-Duster type design which is larger in the front to accommodate the barrel and the finger hole has more of a separate "bow" appearance rather than the solid one-piece appearance. The left side of the barrel is marked "REIDS NEW MODEL .32./MY FRIEND", the serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame (finger bow) and the bottom of the barrel at the breech end is marked "15". The revolver is chambered for the 32 rimfire cartridge, has a five-round fluted cylinder, spur type hammer, knurled cylinder pin and the loading groove on the right side of the frame (not encountered on all New Models). The revolver features the standard scroll and punch-dot engraving on the sides of the grip area and trigger sheath and checkered on the backstrap. In the September 1883, catalog of G.W. Turner and Ross of Boston, Mass., the "New 5 Shot Protector" was advertised as the "Handsomest Revolver In the Market" and "Elegantly hand engraved and in mechanism and finish equal to any Colt or Smith & Wesson". A pretty bold claim at the time that was backed by a warranty equal to any Colt or Smith & Wesson as well. The selling price in 1883 was $6.75 or two for $13.00.

Two Moore Patent Single Action Belt Revolvers
Manufactured from 1861 to 1863. The barrel is stamped "D. MOORE PATENT SEPT. 18, 1860" on the top flat. The frame has a scroll engraving with star burst patterns on the butt and trigger guard. The back strap has an engraved accent at the top and a wedge of scroll engraving at the bottom with the inscription "Nim Colvin 4th Ky." At the time of this description, it is believed that the inscriptions refers to Nimrod Colvin of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry (CSA). In the memoir KENTUCKY CAVALIERS IN DIXIE: REMINISCENCES OF A CONFEDERATE CAVALRYMAN (the book is included in this lot), author George Dallas Mosgrove provided a muster roll of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry and Nimrod Colvin is listed under Company D (page 27). The 4th Kentucky Cavalry was mustered into service in October 1862 and disbanded in the spring of 1865. The Confederate cavalry regiment was involved in conflicts in Tennessee and Kentucky and later participated in actions taken in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Other research provided by the consignor confirms that Nimrod Colvin was a private with the 4th Kentucky Cavalry, Company D. Complete with a contemporary custom case for the pair of revolvers.

Rare Sutherland Richmond VA. Marked Percussion Pepperbox Pistol
This is a rare example of a 6-shot percussion pepperbox with the Samuel Sutherland of Richmond, Virginia, marking on the hammer. According to Albaugh, Benet and Simmons in the book "CONFEDERATE HANDGUNS", Sutherland was a Virginian gunsmith who repaired arms for the Confederate government. Southern gunsmiths who participated in the Confederate war effort such as Samuel Sutherland were known in their communities as "The Armorer of the South". Lacking the resources for large government armories, the Confederate government relied heavily on local gunsmiths. The left side of the hammer is marked "SUTHERLAND/RICHMOND, VA." (faint). Although there are no maker markings, it is of similar design to an Allen & Thurber pepperbox. The authors of "CONFEDERATE HANDGUNS" have noted Allen & Thurber pepperboxes with the Sutherland marking.
