New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Pistol 41 CF
This is a fine example of a desirable Volcanic Arms Company No. 1 pocket pistol with the very rare "6 inch" barrel, and deluxe stocks, that was prepared for custom engraving, but never engraved! This rare pistol is accompanied by a documentation letter from R. L. Wilson who describes the facts surrounding this rare pistol; 1) it does not include any factory name or address; 2) it was fitted with a set of two-piece deluxe grips, 3) the frame and side plates were polished but never engraved nor plated, which would have been done after it was engraved. Numerous companies in the past have sold both rifles and pistol in what has been termed "in the white" or "soft" condition, to outside companies that were intended to best custom engraved and or embellishment for special order customers. Consequently, Wilson's theory is that this specific pistol is one of those guns and for some reason just was never completed. Normally with this serial number range the barrel would have been marked with the New Haven Arms Co., markings which was used after April 1897. It is estimated that only approximately 225 No. 1 pocket pistols with 6 inch barrels were ever manufactured. The pistol has a blued octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass pocket pistol-size receiver, casehardened hammer, blued loading lever with finger hole and a set of two-piece deluxe grips. The barrel is fitted with a silver-cone shaped front sight with a fixed rear sight dovetailed into the top of the receiver. The serial number "940", is stamped on the right side of the cocking lever, and the lower left side of the frame under the grips.

Smith & Wesson Volcanic Pistol 31
This No. 1 Lever Action Pocket pistol ( "Pocket Volcanic") was manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in Norwich, Connecticut circa 1854-55. Total production of the No.1 lever action repeating pistol is estimated at fewer than 1,200. The top barrel flat is marked "SMITH & WESSON/ NORWICH CT.", "CAST-STEEL" (upside down) on the right flat and "PATENT/FEB 14, 1854" on the left flat. The matching serial number is marked on the lever, on the lower left side of the frame under the grip panel and stamped on the inside of each grip panel. The sides of the receiver are engraved with the standard floral scroll design and upper edges have a floral design. There is a floral design on the back of the hammer and on the back strap. The pistol has the barrel with an integral six-shot magazine, iron frame, round butt and distinctive lever with finger hole and no spur. The barrel has a brass front sight with flattened blade and there is a fixed rear sight is mounted on the frame. The frame was blue, the hammer and lever casehardened and the barrel was browned. Fitted with bag shaped smooth varnished rosewood grips. The lever action and integral magazine introduced on the S&W lever action pistols represented the first iteration of the lever action/integral magazine subsequently incorporated in the successful Henry and Winchester rifles. The unique "rocket ball" cartridge introduced with the S&W lever action repeating pistols was one of the first self-contained cartridges.

Winchester 1866 Carbine 44 RF
The factory letter indicates the carbine was received by the warehouse on October 26, 1877, and shipped out on November 5, 1877, on order 10545. The underside of the stock behind the tang is stamped with a banner cartouches that contain the script letters "AOS". Experts believe that this cartouche was a marking applied to some of the nearly 12,000 Model 1866 carbines in 135,000-148,000 serial number range that were sold to a location in South America (possibly Argentina) in 1877. This marking is described and illustrated on page 65 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. The carbine has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, bolt and loading gate are blued, and the hammer, trigger, and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. This carbine has the Third Model features which include less pronounced drop in the receiver profile ahead of the hammer and serial number located on the lower tang behind the trigger. The carbine has the early style front barrel band with integral front sight blade. The barrel is fitted with the second style, two-leaf rear sight. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The carbine style brass buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor compartment that contains a three-piece steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. A small "S" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. Madis noted that this marking is seen occasionally on Model 1866 rifles and carbines in the 150,000-155,000 serial number range and appears to be an assembly or fitting mark. The serial number, "147401," is stamped in script letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. The previously discussed "AOS" banner cartouche is stamped on the underside of the stock about 2 1/4 inches below the receiver tang. There are no caliber markings on the cartridge elevator.

The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral fifteen-shot magazine, brass receiver and crescent brass buttplate. The left side of the barrel and oil-finished walnut stock are fitted with a loop for a sling hook and sling swivel. The barrel has the original folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and screw stop for the elevation bar. The Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle manufactured during the Civil War. Although the Ordnance Department purchased only a small number of Henry rifles for issue to two selected regiments, most of the Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War were purchased by individual Federal soldiers who appreciated the firepower of a fifteen-shot lever action rifle. The Henry rifle was equally popular on the post-Civil War frontier. Archeological evidence indicates that a significant number of Henry rifles were used by native American warriors in the battle of Little Bighorn.

The Only Known Matching Pair of Consecutively Serial Numbered Vo
Manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. circa 1855-1857, these carbines were manufactured prior to the reorganization into the New Haven Arms Company. In July of 1855, the Smith & Wesson name was changed to the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and carried the name until 1857 when it was reorganized by Oliver F. Winchester to the New Haven Arms Company. Each of these matching carbines have a 16 1/2 inch blue octagon barrel and integral magazine, brass receiver, and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The top barrel flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854". The matching serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel, on the underside of the receiver and on the right side of the lever. These are designed to accommodate a shoulder stock, which is absent from both carbines. The barrel is fitted with an iron post sight, and there is an adjustable rear sight dovetailed to the receiver. Fitted with smooth replacement rosewood grips. The revolutionary Volcanic repeating carbines and pistols featured self-cocking lever actions, integral magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with self-contained propellant and primer. Although the Volcanic pistols and carbines were not a commercial success, the development of reliable cartridges allowed the Volcanic Lever Action and integral magazine to serve as the basis for the Henry Rifle and the Model 1866 Winchester. A total of only about 300 of these carbines were manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. making these the rarest of the Volcanic firearms. Comes with an informational and research letter from noted firearms expert and author R.L. Wilson.

Winchester 1866 Carbine 44 CF
The top of the receiver is inscribed "ADOLFO BERINN EN LIMA", and the left side has an intertwined "ES" monogram. While the specific relevant individuals have eluded identification, this carbine may have been purchased by a Chilean or Peruvian officer. During the War of the Pacific (1879-1884), Chilean forces occupied Lima from 1881 to 1883, but faced continued insurgent attacks. The only visible factory marking is an "M" on the left side of the lower tang. The receiver flares to meet the forearm and has the slightly curved frame of the Fourth Model, suggesting the serial number was obliterated when the lower tang was engraved and places the date of manufacture between 1878 and 1898. If used during the above conflict, this weapon would have been very advantageous for its owner given that most of the soldiers opposing the Chileans were issued single shot weapons; the small, ill equipped Bolivian forces were even using flintlock muskets. The Chilean forces also primarily had single shot weapons though the cavalry is known to have had some Winchester and Spencer carbines. Perhaps this carbine was engraved in celebration of capturing the city. The barrel has inlaid bands at the muzzle and breech. Aside from the barrel, nearly all of the iron and "gunmetal" surfaces have floral scroll and punch dot engraving. The left side of the receiver has a buck jumping a log. It has a checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock with large cheekpiece and trapdoor compartment.

Winchester 1876 Carbine 45-75
This is an interesting example of a Winchester Model 1876 carbine manufactured in 1882. It has a "N.W.M.P." banner stamped on the right side of the butt indicating it was one of around 750 Model 1876 "Mountie" carbines purchased to arm the Canadian North-West Mounted Police in the 1880s. The bottom of the buttstock, to the rear of the lower tang is also marked "LOF.210.", indicating this carbine saw use by the "Legion of the Frontiersmen". The LOF was a paramilitary group formed by former North-West Mounted Policeman and Boer War veteran Roger Pocock in 1905 to prepare the British Empire for a feared invasion. The group established local chapters throughout the empire and helped fill the ranks of many units during the First World War. One of the organization pages proudly proclaims that, "Frontiersmen were among the very first Britons to go into battle against Germany in 1914." The Frontiersmen unit the 25th Service Battalion Royal Fusiliers based from London served in North Africa and was mainly made up of middle aged or older men of various backgrounds including a circus clown, millionaire, big game hunters and even some American cowboys. The organization remains active as a non-profit disaster relief organization. The carbine has the distinctive long forearm with a steel forearm tip and a single barrel band. It has a Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges along with a stud mounted saddle ring. The barrel has a blade front sight on a stud and a folding ladder/notch rear sight graduated out to 1,000 yards. The stock has a steel carbine style buttplate. The accompanying Cody Firearms Museum letter verifies the rifle 50/110 caliber, half-octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, sporting rear sight and half-magazine, and that it was shipped from the warehouse on August 13, 1890.

Winchester 1894 Rifle 30 WCF
The factory letter confirms that the serial number was applied to this rifle on May 16, 1902, but was not received in the Winchester warehouse until June 19 of that year. It shipped the following day as part of order number 143721 in takedown rifle configuration with a 24 inch, .30 caliber, round barrel; "extra light," plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock with rubber buttplate, Lyman sights, and 1/2 magazine. This is a beautiful example of a very scarce early Model 1894 Winchester lever action rifle that has several deluxe special order features. The stock and forearm are XXX fancy walnut. It has a short range "Winchester Express" rear sight with three leaves and a Lyman short range tang peep sight. The barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." on top ahead of the rear sight, and the left rear side is marked "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". The caliber designation ".30 W.C.F." is stamped on the breech. The serial number is marked on the underside of the receiver. The stock, as noted, is a beautiful extra fancy burl walnut with an original hard rubber Winchester marked grip cap and shotgun buttplate.

Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in .50 Express
The rifle was manufactured in 1900 and is equipped with a dovetailed blade front sight and three leaf rear sight and mounted with a smooth straight wrist stock and forearm with rifle buttplate. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "50 EX" (standard marking for .50-110-450) at the breech. The upper tang has the model designation, and the serial number is on the lower tang. In "Winchester Model 1886 Caliber .50-100-450" authors Jim Paul and Tom Adams note that there was apparently little demand for Winchester's "Big Fifty" given that only 331 were manufactured between 1894 and 1913.

New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle 44 Henry RF
Deluxe, factory engraved, Henry rifle that was manufactured in late 1862. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate are silver-plated and the barrel and integral 15-shot magazine are blue. The stock is nicely figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. The early style receiver has the rear sight mounted in the alternate sight dovetail behind the ejection port. The folding leaf rear sight has rounded top with 900 yard center notch. The rear sight dovetail on the barrel is filled with a factory blank. The gold-plated, nickel-silver, front sight blade is the early, half-moon, pattern. The magazine has the early style, small diameter, follower and the receiver has the narrow, straight, follower cut. The buttplate has the early style, rounded, heel and is fitted with a hinged trap door. The serial number, "1443" is stamped on the top barrel flat, left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, in the upper receiver tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate below the trap. The hand-fitted buttplate and tang screws are all stamped with the rifle serial number. All of the visible serial numbers match. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN. ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two-lines. The early style legend utilizes serrifed letters except for the second "NEWHAVEN" which is stamped in block letters. The rifle is not fitted with the sling swivel and loop for sling hook which were special order items on early production Henry rifles. The receiver and buttplate heel are decorated the early style New Haven Arms Co., factory engraving. The engraving features large scrollwork with large curls with leaf and scroll terminals on a punch dot background. The early factory engraved Henry rifles did not have the large flower petal design on the forward receiver panels found on later production rifles with factory engraving. The engraving on the right side of the receiver is nearly identical to Henry rifle serial number 1441 illustrated and described on page 15 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The left side of the receiver has the same scroll style as the right side with the addition of a geometric pattern engraved between the side plate scrolls. Henry rifle serial number 1570 has similar engraving and is illustrated on page 19 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING". Most factory engraving on Henry rifles is believed to have been executed by Samuel J. Hoggson. In November 1862, the retail price for a Henry rifle as $42.00 and silver-plating and engraving were an additional $10.00. During the first year of production the New Haven Arms Co., manufactured a significant number of deluxe factory engraved Henry rifles. Some of these deluxe rifles were intended for presentation to promote the new Henry rifle. As sales increased toward the end of 1862 the New Haven Arms Co., produced fewer deluxe engraved rifles like this example and concentrated on the production of standard Henry rifles for sale to individual Federal soldiers who recognized the firepower offered by a repeating rifle with a 15-shot magazine. Deluxe, factory engraved, Henry rifles are scarce.

New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Rifle 41 Volcanic
This is an exceptionally fine example of a really nice, all original, high condition very early, New Haven Arms Co. marked Volcanic lever action carbine as manufactured circa 1857. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854". These abbreviated marks which eliminated "VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO." were introduced in April 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "54", is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang, written in pencil on the face of the stock wrist, stamped on the shank of each of the hand-fitted stock and buttplate screws and stamped on the inside of the buttplate heel. It has the standard blued octagon barrel and integral magazine, brass receiver and crescent buttplate and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The straight grain walnut stock has a varnished finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. A nitre blue rear sight with elevator thumb wheel is dovetail-mounted on the receiver. These revolutionary Volcanic repeating carbines featured a self-cocking lever action with an integral magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with a self-contained propellant and primer. Although not a huge success, the lever action design with integral magazine combined with a self contained cartridge did usher in the far more successful and legendary Henry rifle and also the Model 1866 and 1873 Winchester rifles. The investments of clothing manufacturer Oliver Winchester in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., led to the establishment of the New Haven Arms Co. and eventually the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. The rest is history!

Winchester 1885-Rifle 38-55
Early production Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1886. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Winchester Arms Museum dated 1887 that describes it as: "Rifle, 32/40, Plain trigger, checkered stock, Pistol grip, No rear sight, Mid-range Vernier and Wind Gauge sight, Swiss butt plate" and "Marked at 200 yards elevation "see order 6875". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the warehouse on February 24, 1886. The rifle has a round, #3, 28-inch barrel with matted top. The barrel has no provision for a rear sight and is fitted with a Winchester Wind Gauge front sight with spirit level. A mid-range vernier peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. Although the Winchester Museum letter states that the rifle was shipped with a "Plain" trigger, the rifle presently has a single set-trigger. The letter also states it was shipped in .32-40 caliber, however it clearly has a .38-55 caliber barrel. The rifle has a blue barrel, color casehardened 'thinwall' receiver, hammer, and trigger. The stock and forearm are deluxe, fancy grain, walnut with fine checkering, ebony inlays on the pistol grip and forearm tip and a high polish piano finish. The stock is fitted with a factory, brass, nickel plated Swiss buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with arrows on the end of each line of the legend. The barrel mattting was applied by Winchester over the factory legend. The lower tang is stamped: "-PAT. Civil War Henry Lever Action Rifle
This Henry lever-action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate with octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The rifle has the second style brass buttplate introduced about serial number 4000. The magazine has the larger follower and the receiver has the beveled follower cuts found on later Henry rifles. The rifle has a folding leaf rear sight with center notch and elevation bar stop screw at the top of the leaf and a nickel silver front sight blade. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The legend is the slightly larger, second style, with all serif letters. The serial number, "7034" is roll-stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. The late style, cap-head buttplate and tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The "W" sub-inspection mark of Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the lever latch. The rifle is not fitted with the usual sling swivel and sling hook loop on the left side of the stock and barrel. The federal government purchased only about 18% of the Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., (1,731 rifles) during the Civil War. These Henry rifles were issued almost exclusively to the 1st D.C. Cavalry regiment and the 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiment. However, experts believe that most of the nearly 9000 Henry rifles manufactured between June 1862 and April 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who understood that the Henry rifle was the most advanced rifle available and were willing to pay for the fire-power offered by a 15-shot repeating rifle. Henry rifles were especially popular in Mid-western regiments. Several Illinois regiments had large numbers of privately purchased Henry rifles by the end of the Civil War.

Winchester 1876 Carbine 45-75
The factory letter confirms this Third Model carbine was received in the warehouse on November 17, 1882, and shipped out five days later with 364 other Winchesters on order number 35449. Other Winchesters on this order number and date have been identified as having been shipped to Hawaii. On page 230 of, "The Winchester Book", by George Madis, the author notes that the "muskets made for Hawaii are in the 28,000 range", just like this carbine. Research by John Bell lists this rifle by serial number as one of those issued to the Hawaiian Citizen's Guard in the mid-1890s during the turmoil of the 1890s during the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii and subsequent Hawaiian counter-revolution. Like most of the few confirmed Hawaiian Winchesters, it has a three letter marking on the wrist: "CRT" on the right side of the wrist. This example also has "W E KEALKAI" (Ke Alaka`I is Hawaiian for "leadership: or the leader")on the right side of the butt and "NWMP" in a banner (spurious) and a brass plate on the left side of the butt.
